Indiana Jones Kingdom of the Crystal Skull review

With a crazy box office opening of $311.1 million worldwide and $126 domestically over the four-day Memorial Day weekend Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull has taken the top spot from Iron Man as biggest summer movie of 2008, and I think most people would agree, intends to keep the title. And as expected I was one of the lucky masses who saw the film this weekend. Here are just a few of my thoughts on the movie.

First and foremost, overall I thought the film was good. solid. Nothing mind blowingly great and I don't think it lived up to the hopes of many of us, but it definitely lived up to my expectations, and that's not a bad thing. Somehow I feel bad saying it but the fact of the matter is, this movie could have been total crap, and the fact that they didn't completely fuck it up is impressive in itself with all the pressure and over the top fan expectations. Now I get why some people, like my friend Devon, didn't like it, there are some elements that haven't been seen before in an Indiana Jones film, and there's something about the pacing I think that makes it feel a bit more forced than the previous films, but for me those were minor and ultimately didn't detract from my general enjoyment of the movie.

Even if you read my Indiana Jones spoilerish post about the plot synopsis, you're still missing a few big elements of the story. I don't want to ruin anything here, but I will say this movie really goes into territory that is beyond the realm of obvious realism. For me that was fine though. Indiana Jones has always been a kind of larger than life comic book character; he's a traditional a pulp science hero from the 50s like Doc Savage or something only with big doses of religious mysticism thrown in, but strictly speaking he's never had a lot of science fiction. This film changes that trend. Some people, for really probably silly reasons find it easier to believe religious 'myths' than scifi ones; I fortunately do not. So my advice is to go into this film with an open mind; and just chill out a bit.

Enough excuses and reasoning. The film was solid in my books. I liked the action sequences a lot, and thought the actors all did a pretty decent job, including Shia LaBeouf. There are a few new classic Indy moments, and the relationships are believable, perhaps because the characters actually reference older events. There is a sense of history here, if you'll excuse the pun. While the Russians never really felt like as imposing a threat as the Nazis did, I enjoyed seeing the back and forth action between them that are a hallmark of the series now.

In terms of plotting there didn't seem to be quite as much mystery in this film, but its more of a character piece I suppose. I guess I was hoping for a bit more though. That said, I thought they did a great job on all of the practical elements of making the film work. Meaning the sets, the staging, the CG, music, and costumes, everything in those departments was absolutely flawless. It definitely looked like an Indiana Jones film, and I appreciated that.

The most important thing though is that this film still had the heart to it. And it still made me feel good. No, it wasn't the best Indy film, but it managed fine, and I have to smile to see Indy work his way into and out of all the crazy predicaments he's famous for. I'm glad I saw it, and even more glad it didn't suck.

George Lucas has said that he has an idea for an Indiana Jones 5 where Shia would effectively take over the franchise from Harrison Ford, and although I'm sure some would call it sacrilege, I would actually be in favor of something like that. The world of Dr. Jones is solid and likable. This is a series that should be evolved and continue. I liked Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, but I don't feel another 'wow' movie coming from this series unless something different happens. I guess we'll just have to wait and see if and what develops. For now though this film is a solid entry into the Indy mythology, and that's a pretty good thing on its own.

Indy 4 synopsis

Care of IESB, here you have it folks, the official synopsis for Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. While the following isn't probably much more than you'd find on the back of the dvd case I know a lot of people out there would probably rather go into this film knowing nothing at all, so the following should definitely be considered SPOILER filled... ok. you've been warned.

Seriously now; last warning....

"His exploits are the stuff of legend and his name has become the very definition of adventure.

Indiana Jones.

The whip-toting, punch-packing, snake-hating, globe-trotting archaeologist with a fedora is back on screen in “Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull,” debuting worldwide Thursday, May 22, 2008.

This newest adventure begins in the desert Southwest in 1957 – the height of the Cold War. Indy and his sidekick Mac (Ray Winstone) have barely escaped a close scrape with nefarious Soviet agents on a remote airfield.

Now, Professor Jones has returned home to Marshall College – only to find things have gone from bad to worse. His close friend and dean of the college (Jim Broadbent) explains that Indy’s recent activities have made him the object of suspicion, and that the government has put pressure on the university to fire him. On his way out of town, Indiana meets rebellious young Mutt (Shia LaBeouf), who carries both a grudge and a proposition for the adventurous archaeologist: If he’ll help Mutt on a mission with deeply personal stakes, Indy could very well make one of the most spectacular archaeological finds in history – the Crystal Skull of Akator, a legendary object of fascination, superstition and fear.

But as Indy and Mutt set out for the most remote corners of Peru – a land of ancient tombs, forgotten explorers and a rumored city of gold – they quickly realize they are not alone in their search. The Soviet agents are also hot on the trail of the Crystal Skull. Chief among them is icy cold, devastatingly beautiful Irina Spalko (Cate Blanchett), whose elite military unit is scouring the globe for the eerie Crystal Skull, which they believe can help the Soviets dominate the world ... if they can unlock its secrets.

Indy and Mutt must find a way to evade the ruthless Soviets, follow an impenetrable trail of mystery, grapple with enemies and friends of questionable motives, and, above all, stop the powerful Crystal Skull from falling into the deadliest of hands.

Paramount Pictures Presents a Lucasfilm Ltd. Production “Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull” starring Harrison Ford, Cate Blanchett, Karen Allen, Ray Winstone, John Hurt, Jim Broadbent and Shia LaBeouf. A big Indy picture lands online

Earlier this week a photo landed on the web for Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. No it wasn't this photo to the left. Although, this recently released pic has prompted some people to speculate on whether on not Indy might be paying a visit to the warehouse seen at the end of Raiders of the Lost Ark. Don't those crates look familiar? Anyhow, like I was saying, earlier this week a photo landed on the web. The photo, well actually it was two photos, came first in the form of a scanned Japanese print advertisement for some Indy 4 toys, and one of the toys revelation prompted Movieweb to release their own pic, this one straight from the set. Both photos showed a picture of something, or someone from the movie that give away a spoiler. And not just any spoiler, but a really BIG SPOILER. In fact, it's a spoiler so big that I'm not too sure they can really keep it a secret. They might even decide to let it out themselves once the ad campaign kicks into full swing.

For now though this is a spoiler picture, and once you see it, and think about it you should understand why. So from here on out seriously, tread at your own risk. Only click this link if you want to know the BIG SECRET of the movie... oh and care of a spoiler filled story on AICN, here also is the Japanese print ad.

Interesting eh? I'll not ruin anything here by talking about it, but the implications are very startling. Frankly I'm not sure I'd really ever thought about this angle before with the new Indy film. Obviously, if you know me, I like this proposition. What do you think?

Indy 4 comes out May 22nd.

Indiana Jones poster and plot

Today on the official movie site, the brand new first ever official poster for Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of teh Crystal Skull has been revealed. Enjoy the spoils...

Some plot details from the USA Today. Set squarely in 1957 the film catches up with Indy 16 years after the events of The Last Crusade. And once Indy is whisked away from the halls of academia to adventure he will find himself in a very different world. The Cold War is in full swing and new villains like the temptress Cate Blanchett as Agent Spalko. Indy is also joined on this adventure by a new sidekick played by Shia LaBeouf, and in shades of Raiders of teh Lost Ark Indy squares off against a rival, and highly unethical archaeologist, played by Ray Winstone. Familiar faces appear as well with Karen Allen making an appearance, although unfortunately no Sean Connery. In this outing Jones will travel to the likes of New Mexico, Old Mexico, Connecticut and the jungles of Peru. All of course in search of the elusive titualr prize, the Crystal Skull.

The film will be gangbusters. I can't wait until May 22nd 2008.

Casting extravaganza

Two cool casting notes for you this morning.

Firstly, something that I'm going assume most of you already saw. at the end of last week it was FINALLY revealed that Shia LaBeouf has in fact been officially cast in Indiana Jones IV. This is despite the fact that everyone officially involved in the film (including Shia himself) was adamantly denying it until right before the announcement. While some in the media are speculating that LaBeouf will be playing Indy's son, alongside Cate Blanchett as Indy's love interest, with a project that is wrapped this highly in secrecy its hard to tell whats real and whats not. For what its worth Shia himself has suggested that he will be playing a sidekick role and protegee to Harrison Ford's Jones, going as far as to say that his role will definitely "not be Short Round all grown up". It's actually pretty interesting reading up on this guy. Since the press for Disturbia and Transformers has started circulating I've been seeing some really great and very candid interviews with Shia. I'd really encourage you to see what he's all about, 'cause its not at all what I expected. I can understand how Spielberg must have seen something he liked in him. Even though I haven't seen much of his work, he's a pretty likable actor and I'm looking forward to seeing him rock the bots later this summer. Check these interviews here, here and here for some insight from the man himself. And as for Indiana Jones IV, the final big casting question remains, will Sean Connery return? For my money I'll say yes, he probably will. You just know that they'll throw money at him to get his participation. Anyhow, lets just keep our eyes on places like TheRaider.net and wait to see what news will come.

The other excellent if surprising casting news from today concerned old big, green, and ugly The Incredible Hulk. Despite a very solid performance in my opinion by Eric Bana in the first Hulk film, with Marvel "rebooting" the series or whatever they want to call it you knew that they wouldn't go with the same thing as before. And its really truly official today, as Marvel announced that none other than Ed Norton will be starring as puny Dr. Bruce Banner. Is this a surprise? Yes definitely. But it's really a pleasant one once you think about it. Norton is a really solid actor, who I think we can all agree has the chops to take on pretty much any role he could care to try. So the fact that he's signed on as The Hulk encourages me to think that Marvel and director Louis LeTerrier, are really going to make a smart and great movie. I am not a original Hulk film hater, nor am I an apologist. But I do think, no matter how much I love the guy, Ang Lee was a poor choice of director for the first film. That's not to say that the man behind The Transporter films is necessarily a great choice either, but I have some faith that Marvel realizes the missteps they made last time. And casting Norton is a good step towards a great new film. I'm definitely looking forward to more on the Hulk front.

slow down indy...

it's me isn't it? I know it is... I've been getting ahead of myself again.

Mere hours after posting about Cate Blanchett in the new Indy film, my friend Tara pointed me to this story over at EW.com on their Popwatch Blog. Shia LaBeouf has been out at ShoWest in Las Vegas this past week doing press for Disturbia, Transformers, and Surf's Up. Apparently after being questioned on the whole Indiana Jones casting news, he claims that it's all just a big rumor. That there's nothing to it at all. What??? Is this just clever deflection? Is it for real?

I do actually hope its real, 'cause I like LaBeouf and I think he'd be a well cast as Indiana Jones Jr. Unfortunately, we won't really know anything solid until we hear it from the studio. I hate waiting, but trust me, I'll be watching myself so I don't make any more pre-announcements like that again. This is exactly why I said I shouldn't be talking about this film ... stupid Variety...

ok everyone, go have a good afternoon. lates.

even more Indy casting!

The lovely and extremely talented Cate Blanchett has just signed on to join the cast of Indiana Jones 4! Now I know I said I wasn't going to get overly excited about this film, but with the recent casting of Shia LaBeouf as Indy's son, it looks like this film might really for real be getting made now! Holy cow!

Ok, so really there isn't too much to say about this news other than we all know and love Cate. She has a classic look that is elegant and I think will works well in any period setting. Just look at how great she was in The Aviator. Anyhow, we don't know who she is playing or what she is doing in the new Indiana Jones film. Really we don't even know what the basic plotline is. All we know is that it's coming from the uber-talented David Koepp, of Spider-Man, Jurassic, Park, Mission Impossible, etc etc etc fame. and that exec producer George Lucas has said it will be a "character piece" with "very interesting mysteries" and "the best one yet". Thanks George... thanks for nothing.

ahh... ok sorry sorry. I think I'm starting to let myself get too excited. IF this film gets made I will be very happy, for now, let's just watch and wait...

three times the casting

Three little bits of casting news.

Firstly and most importantly Shia LaBeouf has officially been cast as Indiana Jones' son in the new Indy movie. I know I said I wasn't going to talk about this film until it went into production because I didn't want to jinx it, but wow. It looks like maybe this film is actually really going to get made for real! As for LaBeouf, I actually like him. He's a kid who was brought up in the Disney system, and if I think has some genuine comic timing. I think he is pretty well cast as Spike in the Transformers film, and I'm interested to see him in something a bit more serious. Also, wasn't he just voted the actor of tomorrow???

The lovely Maggie Gyllenhaal has been cast in the role of psychiatrist Rachel Dawes, previously played by Katie Holmes, in The Dark Knight. I knew that Katie had dropped out last year, but I hadn't payed too much attention to it, one: because I figured they were just going to introduce a new female lead a la every other Batman film, and two: I hate Katie Holmes. So really I didn't realize that she had left a big continuing role in a huge movie, I more or less just assumed she was asked to leave. Considering Maggie has been cast as the same character though, I wonder if this is something that Katie will be kicking herself over for a long time. I liked Batman Begins, and with Heath Ledger as the Joker, and Aaron Eckhart playing Two Face I think this could be a really great sequel.

Finally, while its not exactly casting news, Jeff Bridges' role in the upcoming Iron Man movie has been revealed. He will play Obidiah Stane, a wealthy businessman and professional rival to Tony Stark. In the comics he briefly took over Stark's company after some shady business dealing, but after a lot of complicated things happened, Tony got it back. Stane went on to become the villain known as Iron Monger and that's really that. I'd be surprised if they've gone for a second villain in the Iron Man flick; as they're already confirmed to be going with the Mandarin storyline, but I could definitely see Favreau planting the seeds. Setting up characters for a sequel, much like Sam Raimi did with Dr Connors/Lizard in Spider-Man. Only time will tell though. Regardless if we get to see any real Iron Monger action or not, this is still a cool development.

Some film stuff I had missed

I know I was planning on splitting up movie stuff for the most part from now on, but there are a few small tidbits that really don't need their own posts.

Firstly, and I only list this out of respect for the franchise, apparently Indiana Jones 4 is going to start filming in June, with Steven Spielberg set to direct, and 62 year old Harrison Ford ready to jump back into the fedora. George Lucas has been saying that this film is going to be made immanently for the past what like 10 years now, so I'll believe it when I see it... or at least once filming starts. At least Spielberg and Lucas have confirmed that they do have an approved script, and honestly want to get this thing made. hmmm... I'm reserving judgement for just a bit on this one.

A new trailer for the second direct to dvd Hellboy animated film, Blood and Iron has shown up on YouTube. Its definitely worth a look. The first film Sword of Storms aired on I think Cartoon Network one night a few weeks ago, but I somehow missed it... oh that's right, my crappy DVR wasn't working that night. Anyhow, the first one will be available to buy on February 6th. Or you could just go look around if you want to see it. Without even trying I found half of it here.

Oh and speaking of awesome animated superhero films, don't forget about the Invincible Iron Man dvd releasing on January 23rd. Check out the awesome trailer for that at the official website. Or the badass, very violent, adult anime Afro Samurai, voiced by Sam Jackson, which starts airing on SPIKE this Thursday (the 4th at 11pm).

So they've greeenlit a Silent Hill 2. hmm... I still have to see the first one. Heard it was good though. Other video games being made into movies of dubious quality: Hitman, Alice, Postal, Onimusha, Bloodrayne II, Far Cry, God of War, a new Street Fighter, another Mortal Kombat, Resident Evil 4, Price of Persia (which for now is the only one I think might be honestly good), and oh so many many more.

Did you guys miss some trailers recently??? oh really, so you already saw the Ocean's 13 trailer? well what about the new Simpsons trailer? I bet you've never even heard of Fast Track... or what about Hannibal Rising, Balls of Fury, and Smokin Aces... ok, well you probably know them all. Sorry, I've been a bit out of touch.

I'm going to head off now, talk more tomorrow. Lates
