Geoff is a Twit

"Twitter is a social networking and micro blogging service that allows users to send "updates" (text-based posts, up to 140 characters long) via SMS, instant messaging, email, the Twitter website, or an application such as Twitterrific." (from the Wiki)

So I've been playing around with Twitter for a little while now, and while I'm not sure I'm totally sure I'm really into it I thought I should try it out on the site here for a little while and see if it adds anything interesting to the blog. As you may or may not have noticed two days ago I put a Twitter widget in the sidebar just below my bio, and called it "Stray Thoughts". Is it a good idea or not, mmmm I'm really not sure yet. As my friend Bernard so aptly pointed out to me this morning though, Twitter can work for me, and I don't have to use it the way everyone else does.

Most people who use Twitter seem to be all about blogging every single second of their lives. And I mean everything... While I don't think I want to do that, Bernard suggested that I use it to post essentially what I was hedging towards already; that being fully formed yet stray thoughts, comments, or ideas about pop culture and the like that might not warrant a full blog post but are still entertaining (at least to me). So I think that's what I'll try to do for the next few days.

Right now my only gripe is that it has a 140 character limit. Sure you can click the link to read the rest of any long post, but the point should be that its glancable... Maybe I just need to learn to be more succinct. Also I currently have the last 10 posts listed, I'm not sure if that's too much though. should it be only the last 5 do you think? Also, do you think I should move my Feeds section above the Stray Thoughts? That might be better, especially if there are 10 thoughts listed... Also I think I might start bullet pointing the beginnings of thoughts. just for ease in reading.

What are your thoughts on my thoughts?

Wii Fit is funny

I had thought about doing something of an E3 roundup, but there really wasn't that much news. Or at least that much news that especially interested me. In a nutshell the PS3 has a new 80Gb sku, and a price drop (of sorts), as well as Killzone and some new PSP colors coming up soon, XBOX 360 has a heap of great games coming out this year including Halo 3, and as we all know my favorite console the Nintendo Wii has Mario Kart coming with full online capabilities, Super Smash Bros, Metroid Prime 3, and both a steering wheel and gun peripheral coming out. Their other big game announcement was for WiiFit. which I have no doubt will be a great game. Check out this awesome video for the game...

Go check out Gamespot or 1up.com for actual complete coverage of E3.

Catching up with Cloverfield

So there really has been an awful lot of internet buzz around Cloverfield, maybe too much to be honest. If you're just joining us, watch this trailer, then check out my post from a few days ago about Cloverfield. Basically its a new movie by JJ Abrams (Lost, Alias) that has set fandom ablaze with speculation.

I honestly try not to get too sucked into these things; but its tricky. There is so much interesting speculation surrounding this film I am very interested to see where its going. But let's just all try not to get burnt out on the film before it even opens.

Moriarty over at Aint it Cool News posted a good article today trying to contain a lot of the misinformation regarding the film. Also he wanted to note that AICN and he specifically had the real scoop on the film. Check out his post for more.

The Ethan Haas stuff that I mentioned before has all but been absolutely confirmed to have absolutely NOTHING to do with Cloverfield. Neither do other sites like Parasite.com (now taken down), Tossinggames.com or whoever else might be trying to cash in on the web speculation. The only confirmed sites regarding Cloverfield are 1-18-08.com and Slusho.jp And not to say there won't be, but from my vantage there does not seem to be any ARG elements to the marketing campaign; not yet at least. These are just interesting sites.

If you're interested in information analysis, like me but don't want to go hunting around the web, I might recommend you start by checking out this Youtube post that is fairly current and collects the info known so far. Additionally I'd recommend the excellent blogs Cloverfield News, and Cloverfield Clues who have just launched their first podcast, which is hosted by one of the guys from the Lost Community Podcast and gives a spot on round up of all the current Cloverfield information. And finally as always you know that the fan community will do a great job keeping the Cloverfield Wikipedia page as up to date as possible.

I don't want to say that fan analysis has gotten out of hand. And yes I understand that this is from the man behind the unending mystery of Lost, but analysing everything from imagined faces in the fire, to the magnets on the fridge... it just seems a bit much.

Personally I'm interested to see where everything is going. Viral and web based marketing have never been more important and this kind of promotion could really make fort some fantastic buzz. However as we saw with Snakes on a Plane that does not always translate to big numbers.

So what do I think Cloverfield is about? Well I stick by my theory, it is definitely a creature film, and I'm still leaning towards it being a Cthulhu film. If not Cthulhu specifically, then i think it'll be a new made up squidlike tentacles monster. It is definitely NOT Godzilla, as Sony owns the rights to that and this is a Paramount film. But really other than that the possibilities are pretty boundless, and now that fans are separating fact from fiction (on at least some level) the main current debate regarding Cloverfield lies in what kind of monster is it... Guesses range from Mothra, to the Lost smoke monster, to Gamera, and even to Voltron, and of course my current favorite says that it's actually a Rampage movie!!!

Anywhichway, the speculation is shaping up pretty interestingly, and the BS is starting to fall away. Hopefully soon enough we'll get some more solid information. Rest assured kids, I will keep you posted :)

Have a good one people. Keep an eye out for monsters...

Farscape returns!!!

What the heck just happened?!

Did hell just freeze over? Did I miss the signs of a coming apocalypse? Do Ben Browder and Claudia Black have a lot of free time on their hands now that Stargate is finished up? Or perhaps even more likely is Sci Fi channel trying to cash in a quick buck???

These are very relevant questions today, for you see dear readers, the dreams of genre sci fi fans everywhere have been fulfilled. Farscape is returning! Well at least it's sort of returning... Sci Fi Channel has ordered 10 original webisodes to be produced by the Henson Company, who did the original series, as part of their new slate of original online programming.

As a hardcore 'Scapper I am very VERY happy to hear this. Although there is no official word on casting or premiere date the word is that they will expand the Farscape universe, which I suspect is actually code for all new characters and story. But who really knows... I do think that if they do go with all new characters and stories it could actually be a good idea. I love the Farscape story, but if there really ever is any hope for something more lasting then I think we need an expansion of the universe.

The weirdest thing about this announcement though is that I don't think anyone was even really asking for this. Oh sure there are a lot of Farscape fans out there. But after the show was canceled a few years ago, I feel like a lot of them, myself included moved on. And if there was a cause for a show to be championed to return from the dead I think most 'Scappers moved onto Firefly... scanning the ranks of Browncoats out there I know you'll find more than one diehardFarscape fan. Farscape is long gone at this point, and while I'm really happy to hear this news of a resurrection in any form, I still think its a bit odd.

I am definitely going to be checking this out though, Farscape is still my favorite sci fi show ever. I mean even more than Firefly, more than DS9, Doctor Who, or Star Trek:TNG. It is just a fabulous show that I am overjoyed to see return. So here's hoping these webisodes do the series proud. And hopefully we'll also get some more details soon...

Dark is Rising trailer

Well, never say never eh?

I couldn't resist sharing this awesome trailer for what was one of my absolute favorite series of books as a kid. Check out this great trailer for The Dark is Rising, and go visit the brand new official film site for more. Enjoy :)

10 000 BC trailer

Ok kids, just one more trailer today I promise you. This one is for Roland Emmerich's (ID4, Stargate, etc etc) prehistoric epic 10 000 BC. According to Wikipedia the plot is as follows:

"As a member of a primitive tribe during the dawn of man, 21-year-old mammoth hunter D'Leh (Steven Strait) travels through unknown lands on a quest to rescue his people from extinction. D'Leh, leading an army, uncovers a lost civilization in pursuit of a warlord who kidnapped his love, Evolet (Camilla Belle). D'Leh and his army encounters saber-toothed cats and other prehistoric predators in the journey to save his tribe."

Check out the sweet trailer...

One test screening reviewer over at AICN thought the film was predictable but solid. Although he says the characters do speak english, and are all a bit too pretty to be realistic, it sounds interesting enough. And no unfortunately there are no dinosaurs...

Spiderwick and Golden Compass trailers

Check out these trailers for the next crop of upcoming kids fantasy films. I think this is an odd genre thats developing. I mean its great and all, but with kids properties, mostly based on books too, it feels like they have even more opportunities to screw things up. Thankfully I am totally unfamiliar with both of the following properties, so I can enjoy the trailers for what they are. Are these the next Narnia??? Probably not, but they do look interesting.

First up, The Spiderwick Chronicles, which is set to come out Feb 29th, '08

And then we have His Dark Materials: The Golden Compass, this film looks great to me if only because it has a polar bear in battle armor. That's so cool :) And this film is actually set to come out for this Christmas; on December 7th. Enjoy.

Harry Potter: Order of the Phoenix review

HP:OOTP is not the best of the Potter films, but it is also by far not the worst. In fact the word I might characterize a lot of the film with is bland. There is too much story here and not enough time. While its also perhaps unfair to compare the film to the book, there have been a number of significant changes to accommodate the 900 or so page count into a reasonable length film. Yes elements were as spectacular as ever, but its the less than believable dialogue, and poor design choices that struck me most. I don't want to be harsh with this film. Because as compared to most family films of its ilk this installment of the Potter series is very solid; but the bar raised by HP:POA and HP:GOF was pretty high. So while this film unfortunately does not quite live up to its potential, it still for the most part manages to be fairly entertaining, especially at the time.

The best thing about the film is the fact that it sets itself up well for the next film. I am honestly looking forward to seeing the further adventures of these characters, because this felt like almost something of an interlude in the overall story. We want the big fight scene, the showdown between Harry and Voldemort, and instead we get 'something' that tries to compensate, but ends up looking a bit too much like a poor copy of Anakin vs Obi Wan in Episode III.

sigh... I think fans of the Harry Potter films will be happy, the people who do not follow the book lore, I think those people will enjoy this film. Not as much as the last two, but they will get something from it. However, fans of the books beware, this film has changed too much and is too I don't know the word here, haphazard maybe, to do much more than barely satiate.

Transformers review

Transformers is one of the few big budget summer action films this year that truly delivered on what it promised. Thankfully what it promised us was giant frickin' robots, enormous explosions, fantastic special effects, and badass fight scenes. Let me tell you, Transformers delivers superbly on all fronts.

It doesn't matter if you're a fan of the franchise or not, as long as you go in ready to have some fun and watch a great popcorn action film; then you'll be in good shape. I like the fact that the film doesn't take itself too seriously too, I found that refreshing. Oh don't get me wrong, it's serious when it needs to be, and hints at larger more complex philosophies and themes, but on every practical level it's a film about giant alien robots; so I think a lighthearted tone is pretty reasonable as well.

As expected the effects are top notch, but what also stood out to me was that Michael Bay flair for the camera and lighting. I had forgotten what a great eye he has. It seems like Transformers was filmed 90% of the time at that magical sunset hour when the light is orange and flares off the camera lens in just the right dramatic way that it silhouettes the young stars as they embrace for maybe their last time. This film has extremely well executed, dramatic camerawork, that coupled with a really beautiful and resonant score creates an atmosphere of intense importance to everything, where every single action feels significant.

I also think kids will like this movie as much as adults, because despite it being a somewhat boy centric idea, and a fx laden action film it has a spirit that I think will appeal to families. Michael Bay makes dramatic action films; feel good films, and Transformers is no exception. This film is great in its simplicity and its honestly. It is exactly what it promises to be and delivers a really entertaining kickass ride the whole way.

Cloverfield trailer and the mystery

So where to even begin with this.... How about we just watch it and then discuss.

That was the trailer for the JJ Abrams produced top secret new sci fi film that is going under the code name Cloverfield. That is not the final name of the film. Paramount isn't breathing a word on this film and information is extremely limited. The trailer showed up, sans title in front of Transformers last week and proclaimed a release date of 1-18-08. While hard legit info is almost zilch there is a lot of fascinating speculation going on.

According to Wikipedia which is probably the only place a proper collection of the info can be found you'll see that Cloverfield (which might or might not also be entitled Slusho) is a film starring a bunch of young actors that I'm personally not familiar with who were hired onto the project without seeing scripts. The film which reportedly cost $30 million is widely suspected to be a post apocalyptic tale of mankind on the brink of survival. Although I think that info is derived from a bogus source so I wouldn't trust it.

From the look of the trailer it seems to me that the film is a monster movie along the lines of Godzilla. Check out the Official trailer page at Apple for better versions of the trailer. Or check here for an interesting YouTubers audio analysis.

While random tidbits of unconfirmed information have been circulating around the net building the buzz and I've no doubt delighting the Paramount viral marketing people, AICN seems to have one honestly legitimate scoop. In this article Harry claims to have received an email from JJ regarding the film. In that mail it is revealed that the only legit website regarding the film that has been found so far is at www.1-18-08.com.

Other sites such as www.ethanhaaswasright.com which looks to possibly be related to some kind of very intriguing viral marketing campaign and/or ARG for something are apprently not connected with the film... If you're interested in investigating Ethan Haas, here is a walkthrough I found on someone's blog. Also if you go to the Ethan Haas myspace page you might find some more clues that lead you to think the man has some connection to Lovecraft's Cthulhu, a topic I am thouroughly unprepared to broach at this point. But you can find good basic info on from this YouTuber. Perhaps as someone I knopw suggested it has something to do with an upcoming video game by Mind Storm Labs called Alpha Omega. Or perhaps as was suspected at first, it is in fact connected to Cloverfield and this is all an elaborate ruse...

Could these sites be right. or perhaps http://ethanhaaswaswrong.blogspot.com/ is the 'proper' view. Here's another smart blogger who is unraveling the mystery of Haas. This message was also recently found “In His House at R’lyeh Dead Cthulhu waits dreaming, yet He shall rise and His kingdom shall cover the Earth.” And what should we make of Slusho... this piece of the puzzle seems to definitely be linked to Cloverfield; and maybe even more of Lovecraft's work.

Ultimately what I'm saying is are we dealing with two adjacent viral marketing campaigns that have accidentally overlapped? or are we actually dealing with the possibility of J.J. Abrams making a Cthulhu movie?! both possibilities are interesting... and I don't suppose we'll know for now. But it sure is a whopper of an internet mystery.

My copious links should get you started if you're interested in searching out more truth. Personally I'll stand by for more official stuff. The net is ablaze with speculation on this film and its hard to discern what might be real from whats not.

So I, like Cthulhu wait.

We did it!

Yup I'm back. I made it through unscathed and
I am now a very married man
:D

Erica and I got back from our vacation on Monday about midday and since then I've been trying to play catch up, while Erica actually got on a plane for a work trip to LA Tuesday morning. Quite a honeymoon, I know... But thats just what had to be done, and honestly I'm cool with that because after everything we went through last week. All the amazing emotional highs its not bad to just get back into a regular routine. And hey, the planning is all over! that's a very VERY good thing. :)

Let me just start by saying our Wedding was amazing! I had such a great time. Everything came together perfectly, everyone had fun, Erica looked absolutely beautiful, it was really just exactly what we'd been hoping for. And I'm so glad we had so many great friends around to share the experience with. I mean if you've been around you know how fun weddings can be. But when you're right there getting married yourself, and you're in such an emotional place, to have this amazing level of love and support all around you is just fantastic.

Ok, I know I'm not being very descriptive, amazing and fantastic are kind of tricky words, But I'm not sure I really know how to convey just how honestly loved I felt to have everyone there with me and Erica to share in our wedding, and our lives. I get why people are sappy at weddings. Its a very pure feeling and I really appreciated every second of it.

Erica and I flew up a week before the actual ceremony to get everything ready and visit with our family and friends. Erica's Grannie, who mind you is 90 years old, and a slew of Erica's Scottish aunts and uncles came over from the black isle to be a part of the festivities. And we all spent the week in the farmhouse where Erica grew up outside of Caledon, Ontario. Yes I said farmhouse. I personally grew up in downtown Toronto, and we live downtown in the beautiful city by the Bay now, but Erica spent her youth out in the country. And let me tell you, this was a absolutely amazing place for a wedding. I wish I had more pictures to show you, we don't get our "official" ones in for a few weeks but I'll sprinkle what I do have throughout this post. Believe me though, this land is lush, and clean, and alive.

We spent a lot of time getting things ready, although there had already been so much physical work put into preparing everything that we were really touched by the efforts of our friends and family. Erica's parents have 40 acres out not too far from the city. This is maybe an hour drive to downtown Toronto, and maybe 15 minutes outside of Brampton for anyone who knows the area. And if you are familiar with it you know that an Ontario summer, while sometimes hot and humid, is also really beautiful. So we set ourselves for a ceremony out back of the house down by the pond, and then the reception up in one of the old barns. This is not a working farm mind you. But its a really historic old farmhouse and a lot of the amenities of the era when it was built, approximately 130 years ago, still exist. So the barns, well at least this barn has been converted into a workable hall of sorts.

All the hay had been pulled out of the barn, and the wall and floors washed clean, they even installed a dance floor a few years back for Erica's older sister Nicole's wedding reception. So while there was a lot of work to do, it wasn't as bad as it could have been. Erica's father had replaced the old warped dance floor with a new one, and built a raised stage area for both out head table in the barn, as well as down by the pond for our ceremony. So much of the work Erica and I had to do involved the decorating rather than the building. This was a good thing because we worked pretty much straight through on getting everything as great looking as we could until the wedding.

I don't know if you can really see it here, but click to embiggen the pic above and check out those lights strung on the rafter. Erica's brother John and I strung white Christmas style lights all over the barn rafters. It really looked wonderful. As it got dark especially the entire barn had a great intimate quality that was very pretty and comfortable. We painted, we hung the disco ball, we cleaned, and put out all the little touches that made it our wedding. Basically Erica and me, with some amazingly helpful other hands went to work building a wedding.

I wont bore you with all the little details but we did a bunch and quickly to get things ready. Because we didn't even have all week to plan. Erica and I had party plans starting Thursday and going right through the wedding this past Saturday night. Scheduled fun is still fun, and Erica and I did our absolute best to enjoy every minute of it. :)

Thursday night was I suppose what you might call Erica and my version of our bachelor and bachelorette parties. Not precisely because we all ended up at the same bar but it was a really wild night that I had a very good time at. Check out some of these pics...

-

It was a bit of a wild night but I think everyone had a good time. I know at least Erica and I did. Also it was cool to catch up with everyone. Basically this was the night of release. Planning can be stressful, especially with all the family and relatives around. Good but stressful. Thursday night was a well needed distraction.

Anyhow, on to Friday we went right into the more prep followed by the rehearsal dinner. This was organized by my mom and held at the local community center. While usually a rehearsal dinner only consists of the immediate families and the attendants we decided to have the entire extended families as well, especially because we had a lot of people flying in from all over the world. It was nice and a good chance to see our families. Also it was a good sign that everyone seemed to genuinely get along. ;)

This post feels like its getting long so I'll wrap it up with the big stuff.

Saturday was wonderful. We had the ceremony at 4pm, and while yes it was a bit hot, at least it wasn't raining (that happened on Sunday). I managed to get all my lines right during the ceremony, and although I was really very nervous I still managed to not faint. Erica was beautiful. Check out this picture...

I'm looking forward to hearing an audio recording of the ceremony because everyone seemed to think the minister, who is a close family friend of Erica's parents, went on a few unusual tangents in his speech. I know I caught a reference to both Jerry Maguire, and Klingons, but to be honest I was a bit too focused on staying standing to catch everything.

At the end of the service we had a bit of a surprise. Erica's dad and my dad, went and grabbed these two large picnic baskets and brought them onstage to either side of us. Erica and I are standing there looking at each other neither of us having any clue whats happening. And then I see one of the lids of the baskets move. What kind of beastie could be inside moving around and what the hell was going on? Well, I'll tell you honestly my first thought was that Erica's dad had taken the two barn cats and put them in the baskets and was going to release them on us. I don't know why he would do that, but then I thought oh well maybe the cats will be like decorated or something for the wedding. You know? Like maybe they were dressed as a little bride and groom cat or something... Instead though, to my and Erica's great surprise they opened the lids to reveal a flock of white doves that flew off into the sky. I know I know it sounds cheesy, but it was really very beautiful. And it was so sweet that neither of us knew anything about it. I'll have to wait until I see some pics of it to get the full effect I think. For now check out Erica and my reaction shot to finally seeing these birds.

Nice... So everything went off very well. And Erica and I we're both very very happy with the ceremony. Don't we look good in that pic too? ;)

Next we went and had photos taken while everyone else got appetizers and punch and wandered around the farm. One of the great things about the old farm is also the old stuff that Erica's dad likes to collect. We had some great classic cars around for people to check out including a '69 Isetta, oh and we'd hired a piper to play. Oh yes, did i mention that? we had a bagpiper for the wedding. It was very cool.

The one snag, if you'd call it that, of the night came when the caterers told us that their portable oven wasn't working, thankfully their offices were only like 15 minutes away and they just ran everything over there to cook it. So we had to rearrange the schedule and put the speeches before the meal. But seriously. A wedding is a crazy huge production, and that being our only minor problem; I mean that's great. No worries.

Speaking of the speeches we had a number of really really nice words from people. Bernard especially had some great things to say, and it was really sweet of everyone to be so kind. Nice to just know that people are there for you too. After speeches it was dinner and then dancing.

The night came together really really well, I caught up with a lot of old friends, and we danced the night away thanks to some clever playlist editing by my soon to be brother in law and faithful podcast co-host Devon. I don't really have many pics from later in the evening. I'll put a few at the end here though. Erica and I had a blast though, even if it was a bit like being pulled in every direction at once for a while. I was stoked to have everyone there, and see everyone really enjoying themselves.

At the end of the night Erica and I went off to the local Best Western and retired to our suite to pass out. Big days are tough. But man that was a really fun time. Hopefully Erica and I can do it again sometime. How long do you have to wait before renewing your vows???

Thanks to everyone who came out to Toronto who reads this. You guys are what made the day so special for Erica and me. The love and support we felt was amazing and very very much appreciated.

I've got a lot of regular posts to catch up on now, so I'll head off. talk to you later today everyone. bye bye.

the Big Day approaches...

Well here we are peeps,

My big day is finally just about here.
Tomorrow morning I hop on a plane and take off for Toronto.

A week from now I will be married!

I'm not nervous, but I am very excited. Of course, I'm really busy today as you might imagine, but I'm also trying to find time to procrastinate and relax a little too. So I thought i should take a minute to say hi to everyone who might drop by the blog in the next week or so. I'm not sure I'll get a chance to do any updates until I'm back on the 10th so I just wanted to say thanks. Thanks for reading, thanks to my friends and family for helping me get to the point. And no I'm not talking about the blog ;) I'm talking about in general how much I value the real friends I have. I know I'm not always the best at staying in touch with everyone but thanks for at the least humoring me in my crazyness.

This is gonna be fantastic guys I can feel it.

Wish me luck on the 7th. and I'll see you all later.

Peace and Love,
G

Rorschach arrives...

I know that a lot of you out there aren't familiar with The Watchmen graphic novel. But let me just say that it is one of, if not the most fascinating comic book I've ever read. Oh I might enjoy re-reading Give Me Liberty, or Batman The Long Halloween more especially on a regular basis, but Watchmen is just utterly fascinating storytelling. It grabs you and simply will not let you go. If you are interested in reading a great dark thriller, are intrigued by more adult serious comics, and want to see the first and still best story of superhero deconstruction, I urge you to check out this book more than any other comic. And you might want to do it before the film version comes out. :)

For those in the know...
Rorschach is online.
What this site is, or will become, I have no idea.
I just saw this post from AICN and followed.

The site is basically empty for now, except for that pic. which links to the email address: rorschach@rorschachsjournal.com
BUT if you go to the page and highlight the space below the pic, you'll find some Morse code hidden invisotext style. Copy it into any of the many online Morse code descramblers and you find the message:
"Thanks for emails. will reply soon. the veidt method is a lie"
That said even knowing who Adrian Veidt, aka Ozymandias is... and knowing his significant role in Watchmen mythos, I'm not sure I understand it. Oh I'm intrigued all right, just not sure I actually get it.

Maybe viral marketing is getting a bit too complicated these days. Or maybe I'm just missing something... Ah well, I suppose I don't technically even know that this is an official Watchmen film site, but I suspect it probably is. And I'm definitely interested to see what becomes of the film which is being helmed by 300 director Zack Snyder. Of course its still in the hazy land of pre-production. But mark my words it will be buzzed about huge online once it finally starts to come together... that is of course assuming it really does.

For now the film is targeted to begin filming in Vancouver this September.

Up, Up and Transform!

Well, well... who would've thought that there would be so much rumblings and grumblings over the recently announced Transformers Animated television series, but that seems to be exactly where we're at. When I posted about the show a few days ago there wasn't really much in the way of plot details available, but now that the news is out there have been a few interesting and concerning tidbits of info that've hit the netwaves...

Maybe I should preface this by saying I am all in favor of the changes being made. In general I have no problem when even my most beloved properties are altered slightly. Also, its not like they didn't change the entire mythos two or three times throughout the last few TF series; don't bitch now just cause you've finally started to pay attention. And even if the changes don't turn out for the best, I support people trying to make a series more interesting for today's kids. And then finally face facts, retconning never killed anyone. Wewh, ok, sorry. I just get kinda pissed at fanboy bullshit.

So just check out this new image that's come out for the show. You can really see the radical departure in style from any of the other TF series. Click to embiggen.

Next and most importantly though is the plot. From the Cartoon Networks press release:

"Set on Earth in the near future in Detroit, the alien Transformers are thrust into a world populated by humans and automatons. As visitors to Earth, the Transformers--Optimus Prime, Bumblebee, Prowl, Bulkhead and Ratchet--work in the human world, interacting with the 'natives' in exciting and humorous ways. "Transformers Animated" has been created to showcase the heroic Autobots working together to battle the evil Decepticons and save Earth with kid-relatable plot lines filled with humor, distinctive character personalities, and dynamic action."

"Each episode will present a standalone storyline featuring everyday heroes who do good deeds that triumph over evil... Twenty-six, half-hour episodes will be produced as well as a 90-minute special of "Transformers Animated" which is scheduled for release in early 2008 on Cartoon Network in the U.S."

Now that doesn't so so bad. What got the interweb fanboys up in a huff though was what came out of this Hollywood Reporter article where they talked to the series helmers a bit more about what we can really expect...

"Cartoon and Hasbro execs said the new series, "Transformers Animated," will be significantly different than the others, adding humor, never-before-seen characters and a new premise in which the Autobots fight evil humans in Superhero fashion much more frequently than they battle the Decepticons..."

"We've used the basic Transformers and characters as a springboard, but then we're pretty much reimagining the whole thing," said Bob Higgins, senior vp programming and development at Cartoon Network. "What we're doing with it is basically turning it into a superheroes story. We're really excited that we're able to take this decades-old property and hopefully turn it into something that kids haven't seen or expected from a Transformers series before."

That is the problem. Transformers as superheroes?! Not fighting the decepticons?! And having robots with "a lot more human qualities, allowing kids to identify with the characters much more than in previous series." Are they crazy?!?!

Personally, I'm not so sure its a big deal. I mean yes I admit it sounds pretty weird. But heck, if someone told me about Beast Wars beforehand I would've thought they were crazy too. And I loved that show. In fact, I unapologetically think its better than the original. So I for one, am going to try to keep an open mind.

The Transformers Animated wiki has a few more interesting tidbits, including some interesting voice cast info... And other than that I'm not sure what else to say. I'll definitely be interested to see the show now. It's set for a launch in early '08 on Cartoon Network, with the accompanying toy line set for March. We shall see what else transpires in the meantime...

Oh, as a side note, I picked up the action figure for the movie version of Optimus Prime at Target this weekend. Haven't had a chance to open or play with it yet, but it looks super sweet!

WALL.E teaser

While this video is really only partly a teaser trailer, and partly a mini production vignette there's a lot to be interested in with this video for Pixar's next animated opus WALL.E. Back in February I posted something about the plot of this film along with a few other interesting details... While I do think Ratatouille looks great, WALL.E seems like it might be something genuinely fresh. I'm definitely looking forward to seeing more.

Check out the official trailer page for bigger, and higher rez versions of the video. WALL.E is set to come out June 27th, '08.

Where the Wild Things Are pic

Check out this awesome promo pic taken from the NYC Licensing show for Spike Jonze's new film Where the Wild Things Are. It is perhaps the coolest thing in existence. I have really high hopes that this classic book from my youth will be translated well to the big screen; because really if anyone can do it, Spike Jonze can.

The pic comes courtesy of the MTV Movie Blog, and you can click to make it really big :)

New Speed Racer and Transformers toons

So as the title of this post implies there are two brand new cartoons in the works, one for Speed Racer and one for Transformers. Lets start with Speed Racer first as we've got a bit more information on that one.

As reported in Variety Lionsgate (in their first smallscreen cartoon venture) and Nicktoons have teamed up to bring 26 new original episodes of a Speed Racer cartoon to air next year. The cartoon, set to hit the airwaves around the same time as the Wachowski brothers live action Speed Racer movie, will not just be a simple retelling of Speed's story though. The new cartoon will be a sequel series, following the adventures of our young Speed Racer as he enters racing school to learn to become the fastest driver on earth only to discover that he is actually the son of the original Speed Racer, Who has recently mysteriously gone missing. And just like the original Speed his rival at the school turns out to be his long lost brother the brand new Racer X. But upon learning of their fathers disappearance in the first few episodes Speed and Racer X team up to both stop nefarious villains from stealing the secrets of the the ultra advanced Mach 6 race car, and find out what happened to their missing dad. Adapted from the original series, Speed's younger brother Spritle is now the headmaster of the racing school, and Chim Chim the chimp is recast as a robotic mechanic.

Well, its on Nickelodeon, who I like, and its not like I'm doing anything else, so I guess I'll check this show out. I will say that I don't know that I've ever been too enthralled by the recent style of racing series like IGPX, or F-Zero GP. Although this property has some really good legs; and with the new movie coming out, even though the series and it are totally unrelated, I think it could be quite good. I also actually really like the idea of Speed and Racer X teaming up, even if the plotline could really lend itself to the ridiculous. I think what we really need to see is some of the character artwork. Lets keep an eye on this.

The second new series is yet another Transformers tv show. With the last TF series, Cybertron, firmly finished now and the new movie coming out in a few weeks, I'm actually surprised that this hasn't come about sooner. But it looks like we'll have a little while to wait. There has been no official announcement of the series yet, but care of AICN we do have this fascinating trade show one sheet. Check out that hyper stylized artwork...

Wow, now that is a new take on the Transformers. What I think a lot of people don't really pay attention to is that there have been like 6 Transformers series since the original (Generation 1, or G1). Some of them have been good, some bad, and one of them, in my opinion, surpassed the original, but I don't think any of them have looked like this. I've watched most of them, and as a fan I had to get past some pretty big changes to the mythos. But Transformers have proved so amazingly versatile, such a truly robust property that even though none of the series has lasted too long they always attract fans for one reason or another. This, my friends, will be no different. I'm really looking forward to this show. I actually have the entire Cybertron series sitting on my computer right now ready to watch as soon as I get a chance for a marathon. But this new one, just knowing that it will be such a high profile new reimagining makes me even more interested.

As we can see from the advertisement the show, and new toy line, will launch in Spring of 2008. And the show will air on Cartoon Network. I'm sure we'll get more info on this soon as convention season is just heating up. And they often save this kind of juicy news for then. Did I mention yet that I'm going to the San Diego Comic Con? Well, I am :D and its going to kick so much ass I don't even know what to say... Of course first I've got that whole other big event, my wedding, in only 2 weeks time. But my point is, I bet that I'll have something more for you all by the time we get into the end of July. And until we have more official, I'll keep my eyes peeled.

Have a great weekend everyone, see you all next time.
