Care of IGN, check out this very cool new trailer for Wanted.

The film is set to come out on June 27th, '08.

Watchmen pics

As posted today on the official Watchmen production blog, here courtesy of director Zack Snyder is the first look at a number of the Watchmen's key characters up close and personal. Check it out, and don't forget to click to enlarge.

The film is one year exactly from release today, as it comes out on March 6th, 2009. I think its looking great :) This could be a absolutely fantastic movie. Especially since as I mentioned a few days ago, it has now been confirmed that The Black Freighter story within the story will be made. Possibly to be included on the dvd, and rumored to an animated film that will be "direct to dvd" and released in conjunction with Watchmen; the chillingly morbid tale will feature Gerard Butler, as The Captain.

Have a good night everyone and enjoy this picture of Rorschach in his element...

I Am Legend original ending

Care of AICN, and Firstshowing.net check out this video of the original ending to I Am Legend...

I think it is a much better ending to the film than what we saw in the theaters. Why on earth did they cut this?!

Speaking of this film, I recently watched Vincent Price in The Last Man on Earth, which alongside Omega Man are the other adaptations of the book I Am Legend. Vincent Price is a star I understand, and he's a star from a different time, I honestly get that. But he's so theatrical, the film just reeked of melodrama. In my opinion, the Will Smith I Am Legend is the superior version of this story. And this ending is definitely more interesting than what we were given.

What were you thinking Warner Brothers? Seeing this is just disappointing...

UPDATE 03/06 - I noticed that the GT vid was pulled, so I've posted a Youtube version of this clip. Watch it now, before that gets pulled too...
-

just missed it...

Damn, did you guys manage to catch the premiere of New Amsterdam tonight on FOX? I missed it by that much. Was too busy doing dishes and watching Big Brother... Hmmmm... well after checking FOXs website, it looks like it might come online for our viewing pleasure soon enough. The show intrigues me a lot, but it could be really badly done. Check out this preview.

What do you think? The show is next on, this coming Thursday (03/06/08). But is it seriously being put up against Lost?!? Thats just crazy talk. I know there was some rumblings that this show was having problems finding its direction while they were shooting before the strike, but honestly, FOX is just weird...

Oh, and speaking of pictures, not sure you guys saw this one, which I actually picked up a hard copy of in poster form for free at Wondercon. Pretty sweet... The film comes out May 2nd, '08

G.I. Joe broad strokes hint at detail

The G.I. Joe movie has started filming and I for one couldn't be happier. The cast looks great, and it's one of the few properties from my childhood that I feel has really legitimately held up to the test of time. Granted some of the updates are a bit silly, if you read in my Wondercon post, I recently picked up a bootleg of the G.I. Joe Extreme 90s cartoon, and it is hilariously bad. Still, that aside, as you should all know, I love the property and I think this film will be great. Just look at that sweet revamped logo up above. Nice work :)

While at New York's Toy Fair '08, Hasbro's COO and exec producer on both the Transformers, and G.I. Joe films Brian Goldner, talked with MTV about some of the broad strokes involved with the film. But those broad strokes hinted at much more. Check out the full interview here if you like. He mentioned a number of interesting things about the film. The following is minorly spoilerish stuff, nothing too bad but you have been warned...

First and foremost, while Goldner made a point to reference and note specifics from the Real American Hero tv series, as well as the even older original 12 inch line of Joe toys, this story, which he claims will chart the rise of Cobra Commander will be mostly based on the initial 155 issue Marvel comic run on the franchise. To that end Goldner confirmed that Joe godfather Larry Hama is indeed working on the film in a hands on consultant capacity, and will be even making a cameo in the film.

He also really wanted to address how the American patriotism angle has not, as was reported, been dialed down. Duke is going to be the archetype. He is as American as the original grunt with the kung fu grip. This will be about an American team, and yes it will feature The Pit; but it's not just a story about that. This is a sweeping, globe trotting adventure, that takes place as Goldner mentioned in as varied locations as the deserts, mountains, cities, and even underwater. And of course, this is why Stephen Sommers is such a good choice for the film. His track record on The Mummy franchise follows that same adventurous spirit. That same, classic 1960s James Bond vs Spectre feel.

That was about all he said, but hey what could you expect. From there though I stumbled across an actual account of the sneak peek presentation Goldner was giving at Toy Fair. The report, which is moderately spoiler filled, can be read HERE. As should be expected from a Hasbro executive, it focused more on the toys than the film itself, but there were definitely some really interesting details in here too.

Firstly, the Joe toys based on the movie will be the 3 1/4" size of the Real American Hero line, that I grew up with. So thats great news in my books. But also, most of the vehicles we will see in the film, and in toy version, are not exactly as you remember them. During his presentation Goldner reminded the audience how G.I. Joe was always trying to be about 10 years ahead of current military technology, just slightly into the realm of science fiction. Well despite the unfortunate lack of BATs or lazer guns in the everyday world, the filmmakers, and consequently toy makers have kept that 10 year rule of thumb alive with both new vehicles and updates on the ones we remember and love.

For a full list just go check out the report, but there are a few I wanted to mention specifically. Sharcs play a major role in the film, which is great because it was by far my favorite everyday vehicle used on the tv show, and this makes sense as from whats been implied there will be a major fight sequence underwater in the movie. Of course speaking of classics, the Night Raven has to be in there too. The last big one to me is finally seeing Destro's M.A.R.S. base, which sounds like an awesome location that I'll be really excited to see on film.

The report continues with it's interpretation of what Goldner presented as the story for the film. According to him, "The film centers around a speechless Snake Eyes (Ray Park) and Storm Shadow (Byung-Hun Lee) and the female roles of The Baroness (Sienna Miller) and Scarlett (Rachel Nichols) play huge roles equal to if not more important then Destro (Chris Eccleston) and Duke (Channing Tatum)." Interesting eh? Makes me wonder if maybe that recent blonde haired picture of Sienna Miller as The Baroness was from a flashback or something. And if they're going so far into her backstory that we will really get to see that kind of thing.

The film is being designed to be as accessible as possible, with time given to develop backstory for the Joe team, Cobra, and M.A.R.S., which obviously makes sense. The studio wants this to be the start of a long and lucrative franchise, with most of the actors already signed on for 3 picture deals. Relying on nostalgia and he very specific and targeted group of people like me, probably won't make them boatloads of cash...

Finally despite Dennis Quaid 's contention in recent interviews that fan favorites like Shipwreck, Wild Bill and the Crimson Twins would not be in the film, the report says that there will be LOTS of opportunity for these fan favorites to pop up in any of the numerous large scale battle scenes in the background. Just because they're not focused on in this film doesn't mean they can't play a bigger role in the next one.

So I guess we're looking at some pretty solid continuing developments on the G.I. Joe front. Its great news that the film is rolling, and I'm definitely looking forward to more on this as it develops. G.I. Joe is scheduled to release on August 7th, 2009.

FOTC at SXSW

Are you guys fans of Flight of the Conchords? Well if you're not you should be. They are effing hilarious. I definitely recommend you check out their show on HBO. Season 1 is available now on dvd. Or just go download some of their videos off youtube, or their myspace page.

If you have no idea who they are, you have seriously missed out on one of the funniest comedy rock bands ever. I can't say their better than Tenacious D, but it's a really close second.

I just watched about half of this video and had to share. It's a 40 min long documentary they made at South by Southwest in Austin back in 2006. If you like the band you'll love this. It's got a number of their songs performed live, as well as their trademark humor. Check it :)

Warner's gets smart with ideas

So as we should all know by now, There is a Get Smart movie in the works. It comes out on August 15th, and I think looks pretty funny. Check out the trailer.

I mean, maybe it won't be the funniest movie ever, but it definitely looks decent enough for a rental. And I'm sure if I was a bigger fan of the original tv series I would be all over the film, but frankly it was a bit before my time. Just ever so slightly...

Some really interesting news has come out of Warner's recently regarding the film. Sci Fi Wire reports that the secondary characters Bruce and Lloyd, played by Masi Oka, and Nate Torrence are going to be getting their own spin-off film. And not in a year or two; they are actually going to be getting a spin-off movie that will be direct to dvd, and come out within a few weeks of the theatrical release of Get Smart. The characters as far as I can tell are the techhie guys and provide zany comic relief. Well more zany comic relief. The spin-off is unfortunately not set to feature Steve Carell at all.

While kind of cool in and of itself, the implication is also made that this, multi platformed media onslaught is all part of a new business plan for Warners. Get Smart director Peter Segal, who did not direct the spin-off film, said its "a new idea that Warner Brothers is trying to do, and we are sort of the maiden voyage." I have to say I think this is a great idea. I know there are lots of times I've watched a film, and been more interested in the secondary characters than the predictable main plotline. Or even just being able to get more backstory in general, is a great idea.

What other upcoming Warner films do you think would benefit from this kind of treatment? I's have to go immediately for something like Speed Racer, although here's already the animated series on the way. How about Ender's Game, if that ever gets made actually, but Bean's story is an obvious choice there. The Watchmen film is another great chance, and Warner's is stepping up already on that with a plan to release an accompanying anime film, of The Black Freighter, starring none other than Gerard Butler.

This is a great plan of action for Warners and I hope other studios follow suit. It doesn't have to be as big a budget as the main property, but when I like a film I want to see a lot of it. And if it comes to an extra little direct to dvd film, or an accompanying anime, or tv series spinoff; planning ahead of time to make something that can come together at the same time as the original just makes the most sense. We'll have to wait and see what other films get this extra special treatment, hopefully it'll be all the ones I like most.

quick Astroboy update

Following the announcement only a few weeks ago that a new director, David Bowers, of Flushed Away fame has stepped onto Astroboy, we have even more news today. The vocal talents of the teen whose in everything at the moment Freddie Highmore has been cast as the voice of Astro. Is this good news? meh... I guess its moving along. I don't have anything specifically against Highmore, other than a general unsubstantiated annoyance with him. But that's probably irrational. I'm sure he'll be fine, and hey, the film itself should be a good time, right?

Step Brothers trailer

Instant album cover

This is a fun little art project if you have a minute. I saw this on Pop Candy, but the idea comes from this blog here. Welcome to the CD Cover Meme. Here's what you do to create your very own album:

quotationspage.com/random.php3
Click on the link above. Scroll down to the bottom and copy down the last four words of the last quote. That's your album title.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Random
Click the link above. The title of the article is you band name.

http://www.flickr.com/explore/interesting/7days/
Finally click above. the third photo is your album cover.

Now just put it all together and see what you've got :) Here are three CD covers that I made. I think they all look fairly believable.

Original photo found HERE.

Pretty cool eh? I know I only used three words on two of the covers, but it just made more sense. And basically I think this proves that all cool sounding bands really need is a good dose of haphazardness. Try it out and let me know what you get in the comments. :)

Silver Surfer coming... one day

FINALLY we have some more news on the Silver Surfer film. A year or so ago Marvel was touting the Surfer as one of its projects on the horizon; maybe not for immediate action, but something that they were going to address eventually. But since then they haven't mentioned him at all. The last news we heard was in June after FF2 came out, that Marvel had hired the ever amazing writer J Michael Straczynski to write a screenplay for the proposed prequel film. Well at Wondercon this past week Straczynski had an hour long panel all to himself and he briefly touched on his work on the film.

According to this report from Newsarama he has finished the screenplay and turned it in to FOX. Specifically regarding the content of the film, Newsarama reports "it will cover the origin of the character. He said it will feature Galactus, noting that the latest Fantastic Four film held off on showing Galactus to reveal him for this film. "

Nice. I'm glad they at least have a script now. And the note that Galactus will finally be explained on film. Revealed to be... hopefully more than just the cloud of smoke we saw in Fantastic Four. It all sounds good. With Marvel's plans to release one film in '09, and then 2 a year each year following that I think it might be a little while before the Surfer hits our screens; I just hope its not too long. This is just speculation here, but 2011, or 2012 seem likely candidates for a timeframe.

More on this as it develops...

Justice League lives again

With the writers strike over Warner Brothers have apparently decided to reconnect the seemingly firmly unplugged Justice League movie. Rumor has been swirling since the strike ended that the WB planned to start up production again on this project but today Variety confirmed that there is a plan in effect now to get Justice League in theaters sometime in 2009.

The actors have been advised to continue training for their roles, and director George Miller is still prepping in Australia, despite recent rumors that production may be moving to Canada. The script is apparently being polished, and I think the time being taken is a good thing. Oh don't get me wrong I still think this is a very bad idea; but if its going to be done, at least they should try to do it right. Speaking of which there have been some in my opinion, rather mean spirited rumors that the film would get going now WITHOUT the characters of Superman or Batman appearing, but those are unconfirmed and I think rather ridiculous; those are marquee characters and it simply wouldn't be JLA without them. Speaking of which AICN reports that big bad ass looking actor Hugh Keays-Byrne has been cast as the Martian Manhunter in the film. Also it's been mentioned that the title of the film may have been changed to "Justice League: Mortal". ummm... okay. I suppose there is the whole thing about how the Justice League of America might not play so well around the world, but isn't that kind of like hiding who these characters are a bit, I mean that's what the comic is, why should it be different in the film.

Anyhow, I can't say I'm super stoked about this news, but at least they can now take their time to try to make it right. And I know I will be excited to see these characters on screen. Just for now I have to wonder if it wouldn't be better to just let this lie for a bit. I mean Warner's is like 10 years late to the comic book film bandwagon already (totally absurd considering they own DC comics) so why not wait another year or two. Personally I'd be all for a solo Wonder Woman, solo Flash, and solo Green Lantern movie (well maybe with a few other Lanterns so not technically solo) instead of a rushed Justice League film. Sigh... I just hope they get Aquaman right ;)

The Fall trailer

This trailer for the upcoming film The Fall is a weird looking to say the least. Weird and beautiful. I suppose that's what should be expected from avant guarde director of The Cell, and soon to be helmer of the updated version of Westworld, a man so ballsy he simply goes by Tarsem. Check out this really interesting trailer.

Definitely pretty something different eh? The film will open in limited release this March.

Wondercon '08 - Starship Troopers 3 panel

One of my great guilty pleasures is the first Starship Troopers film. I LOVE it. And the crazy thing is when I saw it like a lot of people I think, I absolutely hated it. But I think that first time I wasn't really taking the film for what it was. Starship Troopers works on a lot of levels, yes its a silly action movie about giant bugs, but its also a commentary on war, on society, on media, and on our very natures. I know its easy to lose that in the communal shower scenes, and the gallons of bug blood flying everywhere but there is a really quirky, tounge-in-cheek commentary going on throughout. I wouldn't say it reaches the introspectiveness of the book, which by everyones account including my own, is a genuine sci fi classic; but the film does have some meaning and I think value, if you know how to appreciate it.

Then came the cartoon. To this day one of the tightest most interesting cartoons ever made, Roughnecks: The Starship Troopers Chronicles. I'm not even sure how to describe how great this show was, I HIGHLY recommend you check it out though. You can find it all on dvd, and I recommend the Paul Verhoeven approved master edition.

I've watched the first Starship Troopers film maybe 30 times. Its honestly one of my all time favorite films. The second film on the other hand I've only seen twice. It's not to say that its bad, but it was such a smaller budget and the story was so small, I enjoyed it definitely, but it didn't have anything new to say or show; and that's unfortunate.

Thankfully though Starship Troopers 3: Marauder is on the way, and this year at Wondercon I was lucky enough to attend the panel. In attnedance were Johnny Rico himself Casper Van Dien, and the lovely Jolene Blalock, of Enterprise fame, as well as the director, and writer of not just the Starship Troopers film but also RoboCop, Mr. Ed Neumeier. They began by screening the trailer for us which was handily just launched online today. Check it out.

Then they talked a bit about production and took questions from the audience. I have to say I was impressed with the look of the film, especially as compared to the second one. And I think everyone agrees that its great to have Casper Van Dien back. He was really a goofball during the Q&A, which somehow didn't surprise me... but it was fun. here are some of the points they covered.

They made the movie over a long period, almost 6 months, filmed in South Africa. This is the directorial debut of Ed Neumeier and he said he really enjoyed the process. He also said that the process of getting this film made was interesting. After the first film was a commercial success, but mix bag for critics the sequel became a tough sell to Sony; especially since regime changes in studio management left mostly people who didn't "get" the film in charge. They were given a pittance to make the second film, but once that actually made pretty decent money on dvd sales the studfio was forced to reassess their Starship Troopers strategy. When then came to Ed to ask if he wanted to make another one, they apparently told him that they wished they had invested more mney in the second film, and wanted to try to make it up with this third film. So while Marauder is not a huge budget film, and is scheduled to go directly to dvd as opposed to in theaters it is still expected to be bigger better and more bad ass than the previos installment.

The cast took a number of standard questions about what filming was like, how it was to work together and the like. Van Dien did mention that we can definitely expect to see the 'bounce' drops of the exo-suits from the book in this film. In fact I had forgotten, those suits are called Marauders, so they should play a big part in the film. There were three new types of bugs invented for this film. One of them you see in the trailer, the 'bombadier' bug which is basically a hand grenade, and a scorpion style bug which shoots energy blasts from it tail. The third type they chose to keep secret for now.

After that they showed us a bit more footage, which uniformly looked fun and bloody. I think they're really going to get back to the social commentary elements of the movie the "would you like to know more" sections and the like, becuase Neumeier mentioned how that was lacking the the second film.

Overall I have to say I was very happy with the panel. And it was great to see Casper Van Dien in person. If I have one complaint its that NPH isn't in this film. Although they did say they asked him to be in it, playing the Sky Marshall no less, but with his schedule for How I Met Your Mother he decided to pass. Regardless, I think this should be a pretty cool flick and I am definitely looking forward to it.

Starship Troopers: Marauder comes out on dvd July 15th, 2008.

Wondercon '08 - Spectacular Spider-Man

At the San Diego Comic con this past year I was glad to get a chance to attend the panel for the new Spectacular Spider-Man animated series. And now at this year's Wonder-con I have actually seen the first episode. As a refresher, this series is set some 4 months after Uncle Ben has died, Peter is still in high school, and this version of the story includes Mary Jane Watson, Gwen Stacy, Harry and Norman Osbourne. No one has died, there's on weird continuity to remember, just know that basically it's got everyone in it. Check out the trailer...

At the SDCC Q&A panel the series creators suggested that they were going to try to have every single character seen on screen be someone really referenced from the comics. But rather than be a strict tribute they were not going to stress about mixing things up a bit. And from this pilot I have to say both of those tenants hold true. The first story, Called "Survival of the Fittest", sees Peter / Spidey fighting The Enforcers, and a very revamped and updated The Vulture. voiced superbly by Robert Englund. I have to say right off I loved the fact that The Enforcers were in the episode. They have not been seen very often on film and are really cool characters. One notable character was surprisingly missing though, Mary Jane, but then intead Gwen Stacy was in the story throughout, playing the Chloe to Peter's Clark (if you get the Smallville reference). Its a thankless role though that I definitely wasn't expecting to see her in.

Aside from that interesting development though, my biggest shock as a fan of the comics came in the story and presentation of this first episode. I was just amazed by was the sheer volume of character seen. I finally got what they meant when they said everyone would be someone. In this episode alone, although not addressed specifically, we see as mostly background players Norman and Harry Obsourne (obviously Green Goblins 1 and 2), Flint Marko (Sandman), Dr Curt Conners (Lizard), Eddie Brock (Venom, and recast as Gwen's brother?!), Hammerhead, Kingpin, Flash Thompson, Liz Allen, Betty Brant, and even more I'm sure more I'm forgetting. I was surprised to be so entertained simply by the waiting for the 'who will pop up next' factor.

That all aside though taken as a story unto itself, this episode was pretty decent. I think the show may be written a bit younger than I was hoping for, aiming a bit more at the tween crowd than the teen one, but there was more than enough there to entertain the likes of me. I enjoyed most of the twists and turns in the episode and felt that the animation was very appropriate for the feel of the show. It's simple but good. Solid, but I doubt it will be executed on par with say the Legion of Superheroes cartoon. I liked it overall though, and definitely intend to watch it when it officially premieres on the Kids WB this March 8th, 2008.

Based on my obviously terrible predictions I only got 7/24 correct. Funny thing, when I made those predictions I hadn't seen barely any of the films. Now, having seen almost all of them, during our Oscar party this weekend I also only got 7/24 correct. Man I'm bad at this...

Oh well, it was a good show at least.
