Star Wars Clone Wars preview clip

Here is the new Star Wars Clone Wars clip that I was talking about yesterday. I think this give you a good sense of the pacing we can probably expect. And this is really what I know I want. Battles that take closer to real time, shots of Jedi deflecting a ton of lazer blasts, and innovative fighting styles. I also want plotting, don't get me wrong, but whoever said battles had to have no plot or development. There are stories within stories here, and I think this clip definitely exemplifies that.

You can watch this in HD at Yahoo Movies. And don't forget the Clone Wars movie comes out August 15th.

A long list of quick hits

There is a lot of coverage on the San Diego Comic Con out there, but much of it is buried in panel reports and drawn out press events. Also the world has not stopped turning just because of the con. There is other cool entertainment news to be had as well. But I just don't have the time to write up posts about everything. So maybe a few quick hits are in order. I mean, theres a lot of cool stuff going on, I wouldn't want to miss it. And with that said here are a few quick stories or links for you.

According to THR, Leonardo DiCaprio and his Apian Way production company are looking to possibly make a series of movies out of old Twilight Zone stories. They've put the call out to writers for pitches.

Some descriptions of the 3 minutes of Tr2n footage that was screened at the con can be read here and here, with more follow up details at AICN. And just a note, the footage was NOT actually from the new movie.

Cartoon Network is developing 3 comic book titles into tv movies. The first is Firebreather, a story about a teenager growing up in a divorced family with a typical worrying mother, and a fire-breathing dragon for a father. The next is The Mice Templar, a book about templar mice, a prophecy, and oh so much more. When I was at Wizard World the creator gave me a full 5 minutes on the book after I guessed that it was probably just like Mouseguard... And the third is The Vanishers, about a fifth grader who travels through time to rescue his friends after they start disappearing from existence.

Bryan Singer is developing a feature based on the comic miniseries Freeedom Formula , a sci fi about a high speed illegal mecha racing circuit and the cost of freedom in a fascist techno-future. Seems reminiscent of IGPX with a bit of Akira.

You can watch the trailer to Afro Samurai: Ressurection at Spike TV right now, or read more about the show here.

You can watch a painfully bad clip with Paris Hilton singing from Repo! The Genetic Opera over at MTV right now.

An honestly pretty cool trailer for Sam Raimi's new family friendly tv show Legend of the Seeker (formerly Wizards First Rule) has landed online. The show is based on Terry Goodkind's Sword of Truth book series, and premieres on ABC on Nov 1st, '08.

Kevin Feige said at the SDCC Marvel panel that FOX was waiting the see how well the Wolverine movie does before moving forward on the Silver Surfer solo film.

NBC has posted videos of their Knight Rider and Kings panels on their website. Also catch this new one minute KR trailer.

The will be NO Dinobots in Transformers 2 say the writers.

Care of IGN watch the trailer for the upcoming animated film Resident Evil: Degeneration. No word on a western release date yet.

MTV interviews The Rock on Shazam, and Sam Jackson on Nick Fury.

AICN has a review of what is apparently a terrible script rewrite on Escape From New York by Jonathan Mostow.

IESB has heard that The Rock may appear in the Johnny Quest film, as Race Bannon!

Watch almost 4 minutes of new footage from Star Wars Clone Wars right here on Yahoo!

MTV has a preview up for the upcoming direct to dvd Marvel animated film "Hulk vs Wolverine" and it is killer.

Read Comingsoon.net panel reports and coverage on The Spirit, Watchmen and here, Day The Earth Stood Still, Prince of Persia, The Wolfman,

Read AICN panel reports and coverage on Wolfman, Watchmen, Twilight, Wolverine, Batman: Brave and the Bold and here, and a non-con Star Trek report

Read Latino Review's reports on the Hasbro panel (G.I. Joe), the Fox panel (DTESS, Max Payne, Wolverine), Watchmen, Punisher WZ, The Spirit, Ninja Assassin, Star Wars, and a video interview for Red Sonja,

Read IESB.net's well written reports on Watchmen, Twilight, the Fox panel, the best Wolverine footage breakdown online, and video interviews on Wolverine, Max Payne, and DTESS

And that's about all I can handle for now. That's sure a ton of info, And there'll be even more tomorrow after the Saturday panels get going at Comic Con. It's kinda crazy, but very cool stuff overall. Anything in this list really stand out to you as awesome? In my opinion the Star Wars footage steals the show so far. I'll post it up on its own later this weekend. Until then, I'm off to bed.

Empire exclusives

Well it looks like they've done it again. With their exclusive scoops and crafty marketing Empire magazine has horn-swaggled us all into pretty much definitely buying their latest issue with not one but two sets of exclusive photos and a 3-D cover to boot!!!

First they've got a bunch of exclusive Incredible Hulk photos to share. Probably the most interesting one of which you'll see below. But the big greenie makes his appearance on the cover too, ripping his way out of the pages... and into our hearts, in MONSTROUS 3-D!

And next Empire manages to snag not one but 3 exclusive pics from the new Clone Wars cartoon show. The coolest of which features the character Asajj Ventress, seen below. Seems pretty sweet.

Anyhow, since there are no more American print magazines for film, this might be just what you're looking for. For me, I'm just excited to see these properties finally nearing their release dates. Good job Empire.

Star Wars updates

Thanks to AICN for pointing the way to this great Collider article that went up today about the new Star Wars animated and live action tv series. It's a really interesting read and I suggest you head over to check out the entire story. Of course, having done the reading for you here are the salient details...

- Both shows will be considered canon
- The animated show is going to be aimed squarely at kids, with the hope that adults will join in, I mean, it is Star Wars after all...
- The live action series will be dark, and should garner a PG-13 rating, or whatever the tv equivalent is
- While the live action show has not as of yet been sold to any network the talk is that it might go to something like Showtime or even HBO, and will run in short seasons of maybe as little as 12 episodes (which will make it take a long time to reach the proposed 100 episodes)
- Think Deadwood meets he Sopranos for the live action series
- The Skywalker story is really and truly finished, there is no plan to have them appear on the live action show
- The live action show might very well feature as main characters a mob family
- As we already know the animated show will take place between episodes II and III, and the live action between III and IV

Sweet, sweet, sweet. I would really love for the live action series to follow a mob family. I always love the Black Sun stuff in the Star Wars Expanded Universe and I think this could be cool. Also, I like the point that they're really going to try to make it dark, trying to make it honestly cool again. That's all really good stuff.

The Star Wars: Clone Wars animated series kicks off in theaters this summer, on Aug 15th, with the first 3 episodes in movie form. And the as yet untitled live action series is still at least a year or so away from being really to go to air. I personally can't wait for both. They're going to be great. And yes, I've been burned somewhat by Star Wars in the past, we all have... But I have faith that the Lucas crew can bring it home for something great here. I really do.

ShoWest posters...

IESB.net has some great early poster and standee pics from the ShoWest convention that happened this weekend in Las Vegas. Check all their great pics out HERE. I'm just going to post twp specific ones, but you should definitely look through all of their great coverage, I know I appreciate seeing it.

First check out this pretty cool poster for the new Mummy film. Reminds me of the Mortal Kombat logo. Click to enlarge.

And now check out this great Clone Wars poster art. Nice eh?

Also, IESB has pics of posters and standees for Ice Age 3, Wanted, Iron Man, Starship Dave, Baby Mama, and more. Looks like a fun time. Although I think most of the press done at ShoWest is specifically for theater owners and distributors we'll have to see what news manages to leak out of this show in the coming days.

Clone Wars update

Well it appears that the Star Wars: Clone Wars rumors are true, the first three episodes of the new tv series will be cobbled together for a theatrical movie to be released nationwide on August 15th, followed by some international theatrical releases later in September. The series proper though, will debut on Cartoon Network here in the States this Fall. I have to say, what I've seen looks great. Just check out some of these screenshots that they've been releasing for the new show. Care of AICN, it's a really interesting and stylized look.

I know by now, you've all seen the trailer for the series, but I really want to recommend you head over to Starwars.com and have a look at the behind the scenes "Introducing the Clone Wars" video. It's great, and really gives a perspective on the new series.

This is going to be very very cool I think :)

WonderCon returns

The time for WonderCon has once again come upon to San Francisco, and since I'm not planning on attending Comic Con in San Diego this year I had intended for WonderCon to sustain me. Unfortunately due to a few scheduling blunders which I am not thrilled about it looks like I might only get one full day at the convention. As usual the con is held over a weekend, (this one the 02/22 - 02/24) but I can't get the Friday off of work, and we already have plans for Sunday, including I hope an Oscar party. So it looks like Saturday might be my one big shot. Granted the program for Saturday Feb 23rd, looks pretty darn sweet.

Here's what I've picked out for Saturday that caught my eye. Obviously I can't go to everything, and most likely will stick mostly to the Hall A film panels, but I also intend to do a little shopping, my goal is to get a couple of books I've been missing for a while. And spend a little time just wandering the convention floor. So check out what I've got to work with:

-----

10,000 B.C. is the epic adventure of a sweeping odyssey into a mythical age of prophesies and gods, when spirits ruled the land and mighty mammoths shook the earth! Director Roland Emmerich and stars Steven Strait and Camilla Belle appear live on the WonderCon stage to discuss this fantasy film, which opens March 7.

Get Smart features Maxwell Smart on a mission to thwart the latest plot for world domination by the evil crime syndicate known as KAOS. Director Peter Segal is joined by stars Steve Carell (Maxwell Smart), and Anne Hathaway (Agent 99), to talk live about this highly anticipated comedy, coming to the big screen on June 20.

Watch exclusive new film footage from this epic adventure series! A very special guest will be on hand to introduce the footage and participate in an audience Q&A.

In WALL•E: The year is 2700. WALL•E, a robot, spends every day doing what he was made for. But soon, he will discover what he was meant for. From Academy Award®-winning director, Andrew Stanton (Finding Nemo), WALL•E is the story of one robot's comic adventures as he chases his dream across the galaxy. And remember … DC Universe animated film panels usually end with a glimpse of the future … and this time, it's an altogether new vision for a fan favorite!

----------

So thats all I caught on the programming schedule for the Saturday, what do you guys think is essential? Any one of those that I just absolutely should not miss?

I'm pretty annoyed that I'm not going to be there on Friday, as I'm missing a Bill Willingham talk, a Farscape panel (like seriously one of my favorite shows ever), a writing panel with JMS, the Wanted panel with guest James McAvoy, and the New Line panel featuring the new Journey to the Center of the Earth film. On Sunday it looks like I'll be missing out on such gems as a Tim Sale panel, 'from fan to creator' a goal setting workshop, the Fables panel, and a Terminator Sarah Connor Chronicles panel... sigh...

I should just be happy with all the cool stuff I will get to see, and try not to stress about the stuff I can't. besides having an Oscar party is a good idea. And hey, from what there is listed above I'm sure it will be a really fun day no matter what.

Star Wars live action updates

The ever awesome film site Ain't It Cool News has scored once again with some great scoops on the upcoming Star Wars live action series, that is in the works for a 2009 release. Check out the article for more explanation, but the core points are as follows.

- The series will follow the rise of the Empire and the subsequent birth of the Rebel Alliance.
- The series will be character driven. It won't forget the action, adventure stuff but much of the tone will be darker and more nuanced than simply good guy / bad guy stuff. Lucas himself has said that it will be similar to Firefly or Battlestar Gallactica.
- Some of the film characters that are slated to be prominently featured in the series include Boba Fett, who will be in his 20s and is rumored to be a major player in the series, Oola, Jabba's green skinned dancing girl who was eaten by the Rancor, and Bib Fortuna, the weak willed Twil'ik who was Jabba's main man.
- Some of the expanded universe characters slated to appear include Thall Joben, who if you'll remember was the mohawked young guy who owned C-3PO, and R2 for a few episodes in the Droids cartoon, the rebellion General Durron, who is supposedly the father of Kyp Durron (of Rogue Squadron fame). another rebel officer with the family name of Naberre, presumably related the Padme, and General Papanoida, who is possibly the same character as the Lucas cameoed Barron Papanoida
- The series will bring back pod races, and all the drama and intrigue of the professional racing circuit. Additionally the show will feature in some capacity the infamous Death Star plans which eventually make their way to Princess Leia and R2 D2 at the beginning of ANH. Does this mean we'll finally get to see some Bothans on film? Because AICN reports that well definitely see all the Rebel hideouts, Imperial Star Destroyers, politic shenanigans, and espionage we can handle.

For even more please go check out the AICN website for their complete coverage on this great scoop. As the series has yet to actually be scripted, I think we can take this information with a grain of salt, but to me it all really sounds great. I am very VERY excited to see Star Wars on the small screen in live action form. I just hope they've got some good writers on the job :)

Star Wars on the small screen

TV Guide recently conducted a very good interview with George Lucas where he talked about a number of things including the future of Star Wars; specifically the new Clone Wars cartoon, and the HIGHLY anticipated live action tv series. I'd really encourage you to go read the 2 part interview (part 1, part 2). Or if you just like the SW highlights, please read on...

And please forgive my paraphrasing :)

The Clone Wars cartoon:

- It takes place between Episode II and Episode III
- Expect dark, sophisticated, and PG-13
- They're making 100 episodes total (they're on 40 now, and plan to have 50 or 60 done by the time it goes to air)
- They hope to have it on the air next Fall (ie in one year)
- They're shopping it around, but it will have to be on after 9pm

The Star Wars live action series:

- Scripting will begin in October/November
- It takes place between Episode III and Episode IV
- Follows some minor characters from the films, and makes them central
- No jedi, no Vader, it's much more about the regular people of the universe
- They plan to do 100 episodes total
- They are planning on shooting and producing themselves (ie without network help) then selling them once they're done (IMO a very smart idea)

Also worth mentioning: George is a big fan of Rome, and Jon Stewart.... somehow that doesn't surprise me.

Its a very fun interview, and enlightens a few details about the new Star Wars series' that we didn't know yet. I'm sure there will be more to come on both these shows in the months ahead. I'm definitely looking forward to it.

Star Wars: The Clone Wars new trailer

As this YouTube clip is obviously not the best quality, I'd recommend you also check out the official version for more detail.

I think that overall it looks pretty great. I know that Lucas heavy handed Genndy out of the project after the man literally handed him a successful series to make this. But I think it honestly looks pretty cool. This teaser trailer was released at the Star Wars Celebration held this past weekend in L.A. The show itself isn't set to dubeut until the Fall of next year.

Still its pretty cool to finally see some stuff...

Robot Chicken Star Wars trailer

Hey guys, so over the past few weeks I've been a bit busy and I missed a few little things that I'd really wanted to blog on, or at least mention, but got sidetracked before doing. Especially when some of these posts really do take a while to compose. This one should be short though.

When I first mentioned the Adult Swim Robot Chicken Star Wars special airing on June 17th, the trailer wasn't available yet. So now for you're enjoyment here is a funny teaser of whats to come. Oh how I do love me some Robot Chicken :)

more Star Wars?

Oh George...

You tantalizingly overgrown ewok... George Lucas is a master at giving people hints of really exciting information that either isn't true or is a loooing ways off. He also is known to strongly imply (I don't think its fair to say 'promise') that he will give us fans things that he never delivers on. Well he's at it again, and dare I say it, I think there might be more chance of these suggested projects actually happening than some of the others he's put forward. Then again, that's the problem with listening to Lucas, everything he suggests sounds great, and of course totally plausible... it just doesn't materialize. Or if it does, it looks nothing like what we thought.

A reporter from FOX411 spoke with Lucas at the Time magazine all star dinner and quotes Lucas as saying that there will be two more Star Wars movies, made for tv. They will be live action and an hour long each, but won't focus on the Skywalker family... What?! I suspect that this is just a reported misunderstanding Lucas talking about the long anticipated live action Star Wars television series set for screen after the new clone wars cartoon airs, in approximately 2010.

This is the kind of non-story-story that annoys me. In fact I shouldn't even be blogging about it. Lucas isn't a trickster, but he's too much of a fanboy himself to hold back on early plans. And I have serious doubts that our friends at FOX can report anything accurately... My first real thought on this is that if anything, Lucas was saying that they might do a tv movie or two to launch the series. Because why on earth would they do more stand alone films? At least yet... there's already enough on their plate. Oh, unless we're going to get some more kickass ewok films. Those were so awesome.

That all said, I am really looking forward to more info on the Star Wars live action series... we just might have to wait a few years for something we can really trust.

Robot Chicken + Star Wars = funny

Today it was announced that the awesomely funny Adult Swim show Robot Chicken will be making a 30 minute Star Wars themed special for Comedy Central. The special will air on June 17th at 10pm, and I assume will be repeated a lot. This is a very good thing. I love Robot Chicken, I love Star Wars. so really everyone wins. But the really best part is that RC creator Seth Green and Matthew Senreich, have gotten the full partnership of Lucasfilm behind the production. Including having both George Lucas and Mark Hamill voice themselves respectively in the claymated spoof.

Robot Chicken has done spoofs of Star Wars in the past and apparently in particular the one called "Emperor's Phone Call" was so beloved by the Lucas guys that they approached Adult Swim for permission to put the clip on the offical Star Wars website. When Green and Senreich met with Lucasfilm about that, they apparently turned the meeting into a pitch session for the Star Wars special. And that great initiative seems to have payed off. I'm very stoked about this. Just watch the video and tell me you don't think it'll be a really funny show :)

Star Wars Stamps

Well, I totally called it didn't I?

The United States Postal Service and the Star Wars people have teamed up and will be releasing some 30th anniversary commemorative stamps. In an elaborate ceremony presented outside Grumman's Chinese theater today The US Director of Stamp Services David Foiler will reveal the stamps accompanied by R2 D2, Darth Vader, and a regiment of Stormtroopers....

Not that this isn't like super exciting news or anything... but come on, stamps?! Can't we do better than that? I think they should have every mail carrier dress as a Stormtrooper for like a month or two. That would be totally sweet. Maybe repaint the mail trucks to look like X-Wings or something. This is just a bit boring. And that's not to say I won't be buying them, Oh I definitely will, but I think I was hoping it'd be more exciting.

So if you head over to www.uspsjedimaster.com now you'll see a bunch of stuff there now. For only the second time in history (the first being I believe with the fat/old vs thin/young Elvis) the USPS is allowing you to vote for the best Star Wars themed stamp. Although the Vader stamp is tempting I think I'm going to have to go with this sweet looking Millennium Falcon stamp for my vote. Maybe tomorrow I'll vote for Vader, or Yoda. Anyhow, go check it out if you're interested. Not sure I understand exactly what they're doing though... Are we only getting a single stamp? or are we voting for the best just for the hell of it? I'm sure all will be clear in time. Also it looks like they're bringing out some new SW themed express mail parcels soon; so I suppose that is more than just stamps. Oh and it looks like you can even enter a sweepstakes to win a trip to this years Star Wars Celebration IV at the end of May in LA. I guess that's pretty cool.

What do you guys think? Was this too much hype? Or am I just a tool for blogging twice about Star Wars stamps... some days I'm just not sure.

R2 D2 mailbox found

I actually found one! As you should all know by now, in celebration of the 30th anniversary of Star Wars, Lucas has teamed up with the usps, yes United States Postal Service to decorate select mailboxes around the country like beloved astromech R2 D2. I'm very excited that I actually found one. If I had more room, and it wasn't a felony, I would definitely steal one of them. As you can see from the picture the mailbox has a website emblazoned onto the side of it. Now what you may ask is actually waiting for you at www.uspsjedimaster.com? Well it turns out; a mystery....

After a cute little video where we see how R2 is really just a glorified mailbox, we are left with the rather cryptic message that "on March 28th two powerful forces will unite" and then a text box where you can enter your email addy and they can send you all the info on the day of the big reveal. Yes, I've entered my mail now, but what oh what could it be??? I presume the two powerful forces are the usps and Lucas, but what have they got up their sleeve? My guess, commemorative stamps. But really are some new stamps worth all this trouble?!

What do you think?
