Spidey musical cast

Just a quick note on this topic. It seems like the Spider-Man musical is moving forward swimmingly, as the rumors leaking out of director Julie's Taymor's camp say that the roles of Mary Jane Watson and Peter parker have been cast, and the actors are working their way throuhg rehearsals now.

And the role have reportedly gone to two adorable actors. Peter Parker is said to be played by Jim Sturgess, a British actor best known for playing the lead, Jude, in Across the Universe. Reportedly his American accent is spot on. The female lead though, that of Mary Jane, is said to being played by Sturgess' Across the Universe co-star, and famed Marilyn Manson girlfriend Evan Rachel Wood.

Hopefully, well probably, this will make it to Broadway, because if it camn do that, then it can make it out here to San Francisco, and you know I will be there in a heartbeat. Remember, all music and lyrics are being written by U2's, Bono and The Edge. Can anyone say rock-opera time.... exactly.

Could this be better than the Tommy musical, which I saw 3 times? Maybe... just maybe.

Cloverfield monster up close

Did you see Cloverfield and wonder, how the fuck does that thing actually move? I mean yes the monster is fast, and you can tell its got legs, and a lot of mouth and a big asss body, but even though I personally felt pretty satisfield by the end of the film, that I had actually seen enough of the monster, thats still a ways off from having a firm grasp on a full picture...

Well here's your chance now. The online Hasbro toy shop has a number of pictures of their $99 Cloverfield monster toy for your viewing pleasure. Although I'm not sure why the heck the toy is all white grey color when throughout most of the film it seems more brown grey. Regardless, you still get that final full body shot you've been looking for.

In case for some reason you still haven't seen the film, and don't want to be spoiled. Not that I think its in theaters anymore, I won't actually post the picture here. But please CLICK HERE to check out the pics, and of course if you so desire: purchase.

In case you don't want to look, but would like to know, the figure features:
  • - 70 points of articulation and incredible life-like detail
  • - Authentic sound
  • - 14” tall
  • - 10 parasites
  • - Two interchangeable heads
  • - Statue of Liberty head accessory
  • - Special Cloverfield collector’s edition packaging
I think it looks pretty sweet... too bad it's so pricey.

Wolverine update

I may have fallen a few short days behind on the blog lately, but that just means that when I do post you guys'll get all the really fun goodies, right away. Like here with Wolverine. Last week, The USA Today showed us the first picture of Jackman as Wolverine for the upcoming, X-Men Origins: Wolverine film, and frankly, its pretty boss.

Very nice. Look's like he's about half a second away from busting outta that cage.

And as for casting, well there have been a flurry of announcements. I know quite a while ago I told you that Liev Schreiber will be in the film. Well, that's still true, but not in the role I originally thought. Schreiber will play Victor Creed /Sabertooth, only a younger more dashing version of Sabertooth, than we saw in X-Men. After all, this is the story of Wolverine, and his entanglement with Weapon X... oh I just have my fingers crossed for an Alpha Flight reference.

Schreiber is joined now by 30 Days of Night star, Danny Huston. He was the scary bad guy. no, not the one with the blood beard, the main bad guy. Anyhow, he will be playing the role I had thought Schrieber was up for; that of William Stryker. If you'll remember X-Men 2, he was the manipulating bastard that was played so brilliantly by Brian Cox. According to IESB Stryker is joined on screen by longtime Wolverine love interest Silver Fox, to be played by Maggie Q. I don't know a ton about her character, other than she has some sort of SHIELD connection, and had an almost fatal run in with Sabertooth at one point, but whatever the case I'm sure she'll make a great addition to the cast.

That's not all though, the rumors they are a flying. The film will reportedly have a number of great fun cameos by characters we've all been wanting to see. One of which, who I frankly thought should've been in the first X-Men film, is now reported to be making an appearance. The Blob. A truly great, often underrated character, just seeing this HUGE guy on screen should be a great show. Secondly and more importantly, as it might itself lead to another spin-off film, Deadpool is now rumored to be making an appearance. And who might be said to play 'the merc with the mouth'? None other than the once upon a Flash, Mr. Ryan Reynolds...

And even literally as I type this I just saw some more news, hot off the presses at Superherohype, everyone's favorite drunken Friday Night Lights star Taylor Kitsch will be playing none other than longtime X-favorite Gambit in the film. wow, now thats a great role. This film really is chock full of cameos...

And who knows what else is to come from this film? Might I really get my Alpha Flight dream? We can only guess, but since Wolverine is well into production in Australia now, we'll have to keep our eyes peeled, more goodies should definitely be on the way.

X-Men Origins: Wolverine is set to come out May 1st, 2009.

UPDATE 02/20 - One more cast addition in the day following this post. Black Eyed Peas front man Will.i.am has joined the Weapon X program as John Wraith, aka Kestrel, a classic character and the team's teleporter. Oh, and if that wasn't good enough, 20th Century FOX has confirmed all of these casting choices. So now we're set. Can't wait to see how this turns out.

Wild Things clip

While still a ways off, having been pushed back to a 2009 release, Where the Wild Things Are is definitely a film that a lot of people will be interested in. Not just because the children's story is so revered, but also thanks to Spike Jonze's directorial involvement.

Apparently this is a leaked early clip, that has had some CG work done on it, but is not complete yet. Check it out.

It's got potential definitely, but I'm not sold on this clip really being there yet. That said, I love the idea of this film, I love that Jonze is making it, I love the look of where they're going. This film, if played right could be great. More is sure to come. And watch the clip before it disappears.

UPDATE 02/19 - Spike Jonze himself has come out to comment on this leaked footage. According to Comingsoon.net here's what he had to say:

"That was a very early test with the sole purpose of just getting some footage to Ben our vfx (visual effects) supervisor to see if our vfx plan for the faces would work," Jonze said. "The clip doesn't look or feel anything like the movie, the Wild Thing suit is a very early cringy prototype, and the boy is a friend of ours Griffin who we had used in a Yeah Yeah Yeahs video we shot a few weeks before. We love him, but he is not in the actually film...Oh and that is not a wolf suit, its a lamb suit we bought on the internet."

Well, I suppose that answers a few questions. It also makes me feel much better about the clip. I just hope they give us something real soon. I really want this to be another amazing film from Jonze.

Street Kings trailer

Keanu and Common? Together at last... Street Kings is exactly what I've been waiting for ;) Check out the trailer.

A part of me is just appalled by this film which looks only slightly better than Bad Boys II. But another part of me thinks that hey, you never know... I mean as they point out in the trailer it's directed by the writer of Training Day... that's good, right?

No seriously, this film really might be what Keanu needs for his career at this point, a gritty cop drama. But I think what would be really the smartest move for him, would've been to take on the role of the outright villain. That said, this role seems like it might be a decent compromise. Still the star, but a little bit bad. We'll have to see what becomes of Street Kings when it comes out on April 11th.

Rain in Ninja Assassin

Once again we find ourselves face to face... with Rain!

Yes Rain, the Korean pop sensation and soon to be international acting superstar has been cast in the Wachowski brothers newest project "Ninja Assassin". While the Wachowskis will probably not direct, leaving that job to their good buddy James McTeigue of V for Vendetta fame, this is still some pretty cool news. I have no idea what its about, but hey, its got the Wachowskis, is called Ninja Assassin, and stars Rain; how can that not be great?!

Worthington on Terminator

According to reports, actor Sam Worthington, once rumored to be up for the roles of both James Bond, then Duke in G.I. Joe, and currently slaving away for James Cameron on the set of Avatar, has been cast as the lead in the new Terminator film.

Terminator Salvation: The Future Begins as we know takes place after the war with the machines has been raging for a while, and is set to be a trilogy of films that will tell the story of the resistance, and, one presumes, the ultimate victory of humankind. But as I mentioned here before, the lead role, the central figure in the films, and especially this first film, will not be John Connor, now confirmed to being played by Christian Bale. The film will follow resistance soldier Marcus, about whom details are still sketchy. But reportedly might be some kind of former convict, and will definitely be pretty badass.

Whatever or whoever he is, I think that's pretty good news. It's funny when people like this Worthington guy get 'famous' in the industry before anyone really knows who they are. But to go from James Cameron to The Terminator is a pretty sure sign his star is on the rise.

Trek pushed back

Some sad news for Trek fans was announced this week as J.J. Abrams new Star Trek movie was uncerimoniously pushed back from a Christmas '08 release to a May 8th, '09 release date. :(

Seriously, 5 months! It's a long time I know. And while usually a reason such as 'they needed more time for effects work' is given, in this case the studio seems to have effectively said 'this film will make us WAY more money as a summer film than a Christmas film'. While I can appreciate that I suppose, it's still a bit of a bummer.

There's also some speculation that since the strike has ended J.J. is going to use the opportunity to tighten the script some. And frankly, that's something I can roll with.

Anyhow, sad but true, we're going to have to wait even longer for Trek. sigh...

The long wait for our shows begins

With the strike over now, and the networks making their various announcements as to what's happening and where, it quickly became clear that while some shows were in for a speedy turnaround, others were not so lucky. As I mentioned in my post last week, for the most part older established shows will push through with a few more episodes this year, and the freshman shows will return in the fall. Check out TV Guide Returning Show chart for more up to date specifics. Since my last post though a number of things have been officially announced. NBC, CBS and ABC have all issued press releases on the state of their shows.

Of what I think are the three biggest scripted tv shows on the air the most disappointing news has to be or 24. Fans are going to have to wait until January '09 for the shows return. Thankfully, I'm not really into the show, so I think I'll be ok. Conversely, Lost fans, of which I definitely am one, can be really happy with the announcement that 4 or 5 additional episodes are expected to start shooting immediately and are scheduled to air in April and May. Heroes, of which I am something of a rabid fanboy, will have to wait as well. NBC and the producers have decided to hold off on it until the Fall... sigh, so sad.

I suppose at least we know now. And additionally as some good news, many shows will actually be starting to shoot much sooner than the usual schedule. Beginning production for a Fall show as early as the beginning of Summer as opposed to the standard midway through. This means a few things that I think are really good. Firstly the producers, writers, and actors will have time to breathe. Not that the shooting schedule will be longer I'm sure, but that the option to go back and shoot a pick up, or to spend that extra day on effects shots in post production are much more viable, which generally can only serve to better a show. The other outcome will be that shows will not be 'forced' to take so many breaks while airing. If we learned anything from last season's Lost, it's that fans get pissy when they have to wait too long for new episodes.

While I'm not super psyched about the long wait ahead for Heroes, at least we know when it's coming now, and knowing is half the battle.

Pineapple Express trailer

The Pineapple Express, is the newest installment from the Judd Apatow camp and man it looks like another winner to me :) I just love Seth Rogan, and honestly I barely even recognized James Franco there. Seriously, I think this will be some funny shit.

Pineapple Express is set to open on August 8th, '08.

blu ray wins this round...

Two big announcements in the "Format Wars" last week, might have marked the death knell for HD-dvd. And if not the final blows, they definitely are serious wounds. Because let's also keep in mind that this is a mere month and change since Warner's announced that they were dropping the HD format. The two heavy blows came when first Netflix announced that they were dropping HD-dvd completely, followed a day later by the largest US consumer electronics retailer Best Buy's decision to only publically endorse blu ray. Of course as a retailer they can't drop HD-dvd altogether, but they intend to only display, and 'recommend' blu ray.

These moves are maybe not unexpected to people who live and breathe by the format wars (obviously not me if you know just about anything). But what does it mean for the rest of us? Well, I think we're getting some pretty clear signs that the war is winding down to a close. Oh I know, every time in the past when I've said that, it seems like we get some new victory on the side that was losing so badly before, but we're coming down to the wire and the decisions being made now are the ones that will matter the most. I've heard the arguments that we're just going to evolve right out of hard copy media, but frankly I don't buy it. Not now, not yet. I sure don't think old school dvd is going anywhere anytime soon. In fact I bet old school dvd (playing) technology exists well through the entire life cycle of high definition hard copy media, and only actually dies when blu ray or whatever phases out into a purely digital age. But that's beside the point I suppose. I think this portends the end of the speculation. Does it mean I will go out and buy a PS3 next week? No, I wish it did. This is a sure step towards something more permanent though, and I am all for that kind of determination.

For now we'll have to wait and see what Paramount and Disney do when their reported temp contract ends with the HD camp in the spring and they need to make a decision. That, and as my friend Devon likes to remind me Apple's as yet undeclared decision, may make all the difference in the world.

Clone Wars update

Well it appears that the Star Wars: Clone Wars rumors are true, the first three episodes of the new tv series will be cobbled together for a theatrical movie to be released nationwide on August 15th, followed by some international theatrical releases later in September. The series proper though, will debut on Cartoon Network here in the States this Fall. I have to say, what I've seen looks great. Just check out some of these screenshots that they've been releasing for the new show. Care of AICN, it's a really interesting and stylized look.

I know by now, you've all seen the trailer for the series, but I really want to recommend you head over to Starwars.com and have a look at the behind the scenes "Introducing the Clone Wars" video. It's great, and really gives a perspective on the new series.

This is going to be very very cool I think :)

The new and improved Destro

A little while ago I posted that veteran theater actor David Murray had agreed to take on the role of Destro in the upcoming G.I. Joe movie. A great role as what many assume to be the central villain of the film. Well I guess Murray had some work visa issues, because word comes down today, one day after filming officially began, that he is out and who is in but none other than Doctor Who himself Christopher Eccleston! Here is a good rundown of Destro's character, or just read his handy dandy filecard.

I think this is inspired casting. Eccleston will do great with the role. Good choice :)

Returning tv timetable

As I expected Michael Ausiello over at TV Guide has quickly, and surely compiled a list of all your favorite and hopefully returning shows in the post strike era. Check it out and re-check it often over the next few days to get the most up to date info as everything is still in flux right now. For my money there are a couple of shows I care about that I'm very interested to see more of soon. And no I'm not just talking about Big Brother, which starts up again this Tuesday :)

From TV Guide's returning show chart here are a few selections as of 02/10 at about 4pm.

24
Expected to return this fall or January '09.

30 Rock
Expected to shoot 5 to 10 new episodes to air in April/May.

Bionic Woman
No new episodes expected. Ever.

The Big Bang Theory
Expected to shoot 5 to 7 new episodes to air in April/May.

Chuck
No new episodes until fall.

Friday Night Lights
No new episodes expected for this season. Future TBD.

Grey's Anatomy
Expected to shoot 4 or 5 new episodes to air in April/May

Heroes
TBD.

House
Expected to shoot 4 to 6 new episodes to air in April/May.

How I Met Your Mother
Expected to shoot 5 to 7 new episodes to air in April/May.

Lost
Six pre-strike episodes remain. Six additional episodes could air this season.

The Office
Expected to shoot 5 to 10 new episodes to air in April/May.

Reaper
Three pre-strike episodes remain. Future beyond that TBD.

Saturday Night Live
Could be back on the air as early as Feb. 16.

Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles
Five pre-strike episodes remain. Future beyond that TBD.

For more, and up-to-date info, check out the TV Guide page.

Oh and speaking of the strike, as I mentioned in my post yesterday, the WGA looks like it definitely will be holding a 48 hour member voting period to decide whether to officially accept the terms of the proposal. While it is pretty clear that the terms will be accepted, that means the strike will technically probably end Tuesday night or Wednesday morning at the earliest. That said, word is that most writers, and producers as is evidenced here, will be prepping for work to begin as soon as humanly possible once the strike ends for good.

WonderCon returns

The time for WonderCon has once again come upon to San Francisco, and since I'm not planning on attending Comic Con in San Diego this year I had intended for WonderCon to sustain me. Unfortunately due to a few scheduling blunders which I am not thrilled about it looks like I might only get one full day at the convention. As usual the con is held over a weekend, (this one the 02/22 - 02/24) but I can't get the Friday off of work, and we already have plans for Sunday, including I hope an Oscar party. So it looks like Saturday might be my one big shot. Granted the program for Saturday Feb 23rd, looks pretty darn sweet.

Here's what I've picked out for Saturday that caught my eye. Obviously I can't go to everything, and most likely will stick mostly to the Hall A film panels, but I also intend to do a little shopping, my goal is to get a couple of books I've been missing for a while. And spend a little time just wandering the convention floor. So check out what I've got to work with:

So thats all I caught on the programming schedule for the Saturday, what do you guys think is essential? Any one of those that I just absolutely should not miss?

I'm pretty annoyed that I'm not going to be there on Friday, as I'm missing a Bill Willingham talk, a Farscape panel (like seriously one of my favorite shows ever), a writing panel with JMS, the Wanted panel with guest James McAvoy, and the New Line panel featuring the new Journey to the Center of the Earth film. On Sunday it looks like I'll be missing out on such gems as a Tim Sale panel, 'from fan to creator' a goal setting workshop, the Fables panel, and a Terminator Sarah Connor Chronicles panel... sigh...

I should just be happy with all the cool stuff I will get to see, and try not to stress about the stuff I can't. besides having an Oscar party is a good idea. And hey, from what there is listed above I'm sure it will be a really fun day no matter what.

It's all over baby

Well basically. Still waiting on a few dotted i's and crossed t's by the AMPTP, but reportedly the proposed settlement between the striking WGA and the studios has come to a fruitful conclusion today. Official or not, it seems fair to say: THE STRIKE IS OVER.

As I mentioned a few days ago as this deal was looming after a tentative 'informal' agreement was reached a week ago. Care of United Hollywood, here is the letter sent out to guild members...
------

To Our Fellow Members,

We have a tentative deal.

It is an agreement that protects a future in which the Internet becomes the primary means of both content creation and delivery. It creates formulas for revenue-based residuals in new media, provides access to deals and financial data to help us evaluate and enforce those formulas, and establishes the principle that, "When they get paid, we get paid."

Specific terms of the agreement are described in the summary at the following link - http://www.wga.org/contract_07/wga_tent_summary.pdf - and will be further discussed at our Saturday membership meetings on both coasts. At those meetings we will also discuss how we will proceed regarding ratification of this agreement and lifting the restraining order that ends the strike. Details of the Los Angeles meeting can be found at http://www.wga.org/subpage_member.aspx?id=2763.

Less than six months ago, the AMPTP wanted to enact profit-based residuals, defer all Internet compensation in favor of a study, forever eliminate "distributor's gross" valuations, and enforce 39 pages of rollbacks to compensation, pension and health benefits, reacquisition, and separated rights. Today, thanks to three months of physical resolve, determination, and perseverance, we have a contract that includes WGA jurisdiction and separated rights in new media, residuals for Internet reuse, enforcement and auditing tools, expansion of fair market value and distributor's gross language, improvements to other traditional elements of the MBA, and no rollbacks.

Over these three difficult months, we shut down production of nearly all scripted content in TV and film and had a serious impact on the business of our employers in ways they did not expect and were hard pressed to deflect. Nevertheless, an ongoing struggle against seven, multinational media conglomerates, no matter how successful, is exhausting, taking an enormous personal toll on our members and countless others. As such, we believe that continuing to strike now will not bring sufficient gains to outweigh the potential risks and that the time has come to accept this contract and settle the strike.

Much has been achieved, and while this agreement is neither perfect nor perhaps all that we deserve for the countless hours of hard work and sacrifice, our strike has been a success. We activated, engaged, and involved the membership of our Guilds with a solidarity that has never before occurred. We developed a captains system and a communications structure that used the Internet to build bonds within our membership and beyond. We earned the backing of other unions and their members worldwide, the respect of elected leaders and politicians throughout the nation, and the overwhelming support of fans and the general public. Our thanks to all of them, and to the staffs at both Guilds who have worked so long and patiently to help us all.

There is much yet to be done and we intend to use all the techniques and relationships we've developed in this strike to make it happen. We must support our brothers and sisters in SAG who, as their contract expires in less than five months, will be facing many of the same challenges we have just endured. We must further pursue new relationships we have established in Washington and in state and local governments so that we can maintain leverage against the consolidated multinational conglomerates with whom we bargain. We must be vigilant in monitoring the deals that are made in new media so that in the years ahead we can enforce and expand our contract. We must fight to get decent working conditions and benefits for writers of reality TV, animation, and any other genre in which writers do not have a WGA contract.

Most important, however, is to continue to use the new collective power we have generated for our collective benefit. More than ever, now and beyond, we are all in this together.

Best,

Patric M. Verrone
President, WGAW

Michael Winship
President, WGAE

-------
Yes, the AMPTP are dragging their feet slightly on the final naggling issues, trying to squeeze their last possible cent, point, or whatnot through the door as it closes behind them; and the WGA is talking about holding a vote within the next 48 hours to ratify the terms of the deal. Generally speaking though, this deal is done. The 3 month long writers strike really finally is over. And a formal final FINAL end will probably come Monday, or early next week.

Keep an eye on TV Guide's strike watch page as they will be updating us all on the fate of our favorite tv shows as soon as they get official word. However as I mentioned most likely we will be getting the older established hits back for a few more episodes this season, and the freshman shows will have to hold off until the Fall. As for Lost, and Heroes... who can say yet. Of course rampant speculation on some of the films that could get back on track immediately has already begun, thanks to IGN and Variety. They specifically mention Angels & Demons, JLA, and Transformers 2 as properties that could possibly move forward very rapidly. I for one doubt it, but I suppose they could.

Really, at this point, we should just be happy that the strike is ending, and enjoy whatever tv and movie we do get with a minimum of griping. Even if it is more ridiculous yet so very very addictive Big Brother episodes...

At least we've got the Oscars coming up :)

Adsense is here

Yup; it is.

Not sure what really to say about it but I thought I should at least acknowledge that I've put a few small, hopefully unobtrusive Adsense advertisements on the sidebar of my page here. It seems silly not to have them really, and I sincerely hope they don't interfere with your enjoyment of reading my posts.

It's been a long and difficult decision to put the ads here, because I obviously am not really doing this for any direct compensation. I just enjoy writing. If I can parlay the experience this site has given me into a writing or marketing job then all the better, but I'm not specifically trying to get rich writing AISL Thing is, life has an imposing way of moving forward, and I have no excuse not to put ads on the site, especially now that E and I are thinking of buying a house and my life is moving steadily forward. This is a concession that must be made for the greater good, and so far I think I can live with that.

Let me know what you think. I won't promise to change anything, but if you have a suggestion for a better way to do it, or want to recommend another program other than Adsense that might work better, please let me know in the comments section.

For now, I think things look pretty much alright. Let's hope it stays that way.

Abomination: the toy

While this isn't exactly the same as a sneak peek of the character from the actual film, it definitely gives you a solid idea of how the Abomination, played by Tim Roth, will look in this summers upcoming Incredible Hulk film.

Care of Superherohype! check out this picture of some action figures planned for the film. Click to enlarge...

The Incredible Hulk opens on June 13th '08.

Lost is back, sweet

I just wanted to mention how great I think it is that Lost is back in action now. This show is seriously one of the best pieces of television ever. The first two episodes this season have been great. I think we need another two or three more to get a real sense of where this season is going, or would be if not for the strike interruption, but I like the way were just being thrown into it.

The Hurley flash forward in the premiere was excellently handled, only now I'm left stumped as to who might be the other members of the Oceanic Six... I'd guess one is the man Kate had to get back to in the season 3 finale, and another is probably the dead man in the coffin, but who is the other one. My guess, is that its Sawyer, waiting for Kate back home, and Ben in the coffin. I also think that the flash forwards are not the end of the series. My theory is that at least the final full season will take place back on the island, only after the flash forwards... exactly.

Logistically speaking only 8 episodes of Lost were made before the strike hit. All 8 episodes are scheduled to air weekly until they are finished for this season. With the strike looking to end now, the fate of the show to come for this season, is still up in the air. Most likely, the 8 produced episodes will suffice until at least the Fall, but who knows what ABC has up their sleeve.

As a mini spoiler, if you're interested in knowing who will star in the flash forward/back for the 8th and final episode of this contracted season, just highlight ahead to read that it is all about Michael.

Finally, remember to fly Oceanic Air.

Zombie on Conan... maybe

Well, at first it seemed a bit odd, but people seemed more or less accepting. Then it sounded like maybe the man had just made up a little internet rumor in order to get his name out there, but now it looks like word has indeed come down that Rob Zombie is legitimately in the running for the directors chair on the new Conan film.

We all know he's fond of remakes after seeing what he did with Halloween, and regardless of his stock and trade for the horror genre, I actually think he might be a really great choice for the Conan film. If there's one thing the new and revamped Conan film needs its a bit of gore to keep it fresh; something the Schwarzenegger flicks never really managed.

Although, whether it was him starting the rumor or not, he has not been offered the job quite yet. According to IGN, Zombie joins fellow directors Xavier Gens of Hitman fame, Neil Marshall of The Descent, and possibly more on the shortlist of possibilities. We'll just have to wait and see what becomes of this as we move forward but for my money, thinking about all of these directors, I actually think Zombie might be the best for the role. It would definitely be a ballsy move, but I say Conan needs something visceral to get it going strong with a new generation of fans.

Quantum poster and vid

Oh if only that post title was referring to a Quantum Leap movie... sigh... one day maybe.

As I mentioned before, I've little interest in overly covering the new Bond film Quantum of Solace, but I did recently run across this new teaser poster for the film, care of AICN, and thought I'd share. Do you think its cool, or just trying a bit too hard?

Also, and this is actually legitimately kind of interesting is a little behind the scenes clip on the start of filming. Check it out.

I don't want to come off as really having anything against James Bond here, I'm sure it'll be entertaining. Maybe I just care about other things that much more. We shall see what becomes of 007 on November 13th this year.

Brand new K.I.T.T.

Can you feel the excitement in the air yet? Can't you just taste it? It's the beginning of a brand new era of television and it begins with Knight Rider. The backdoor pilot is set to air on NBC on February 17th. We only got like a week and change to go! You should probably set your Tivo, and start planning you Knight Rider viewing parties with your friends now. Because, you certainly don't want to leave it up to the last minute.

In a surprising turn of events, the tv series has done a last minute recast. With a mere two weeks to go before air, it was announced that the voice of the new K.I.T.T., Will Arnett has been taken off the project and replaced with none other than Val Kilmer! yes, thats what I said, Val Kilmer!!

This totally unexpected news is based on a conflict of interests between Arnett's career and the advertisers on the new Knight Rider show. You see, Arnett has done voice over work for years, effectively becoming a spokesman, for General Motors, and that of course doesn't fly well with Ford who are not only heavily sponsoring the Knight Rider program, but are actually supplying the car. The new version of K.I.T.T. is a modified Ford Mustang, a change from the Trans AM in the original series, and Ford was none too comfortable with a rival spokesman becoming the embodiment of their vehicle.

I guess it makes sense, but man, you'd think they could've mentioned this a little earlier eh? Ah well, Kilmer's not doing too much these days, this might be good for him. Either way, I'm still looking forward to the 17th. It's going to be sweet :)

Cover Girl cast

While never as popular as Scarlett, or my personal favorite Lady Jaye, Cover Girl was as far as I know only the third G.I. Joe character around.... hmmm would Jinx be the fourth then? Anyhow , according to Joe lore Cover Girl was a successful American model who'd decided that enough was enough and joined the army for a new challenge... yeah just like how on Grey's Anatomy, Katherine Heigl quit modeling to become a doctor... extremely believable. That's beside the point though I suppose, because according to IESB the role of Cover Girl in the upcoming G.I. Joe film has been cast, and just for this one time I think I'll suspend my disbelief.

From her two filecards you'll see that she is an armored vehicle expert, and as far as I remember from the cratoon she was always a bit of a tomboy greasemonkey. What I do not remember is her looking like Czech Supermodel Karolína Isela Kurková, because seriously, wow.

Apparently she is best known for her Victoria Secret angel wings work... I'm looking forward to seeing her in more, or less as the case may be ;)

Wolverine and the X-Men trailer

Argh, it's frustrating when I can't get sites to work properly. ah well, nevermind. Recently launched onto the web, through this tricky French website comes a trailer for Marvel's new cartoon Wolverine and the X-Men. Seriously kids, this is not the X-Men you remember. Yes it build more on the traditional 90s cartoon X-Men series than X-Men: Evolution, but it seems in my estimation at least to be really an entirely new beast. and um, is that Foo Fighters in the soundtrack?!? I know it's just a teaser, but where on earth did that come from? Check it out.

Wolverine and the X-Men should be playing on the small screen this Fall. Looks pretty bad ass.

The Happening teaser

This is a pretty f---ed up trailer, that leads you to the obvious question: what the hell is Happening?

Knowing Shyamalan, by the end of the movie we'll all come to the conclusion that it was just another really silly yet seemingly clever plot device. By the next day well be upset by it, and then slowly realize that we still kind of like it. At least that's how I feel about all of his other films so far.

The Happening comes out on June 13th, '08.

UPDATE 02/07 - The trailer on this post was removed from Youtube, so I went and found another working copy of it. Please enjoy.

A big Indy picture lands online

Earlier this week a photo landed on the web for Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. No it wasn't this photo to the left. Although, this recently released pic has prompted some people to speculate on whether on not Indy might be paying a visit to the warehouse seen at the end of Raiders of the Lost Ark. Don't those crates look familiar? Anyhow, like I was saying, earlier this week a photo landed on the web. The photo, well actually it was two photos, came first in the form of a scanned Japanese print advertisement for some Indy 4 toys, and one of the toys revelation prompted Movieweb to release their own pic, this one straight from the set. Both photos showed a picture of something, or someone from the movie that give away a spoiler. And not just any spoiler, but a really BIG SPOILER. In fact, it's a spoiler so big that I'm not too sure they can really keep it a secret. They might even decide to let it out themselves once the ad campaign kicks into full swing.

For now though this is a spoiler picture, and once you see it, and think about it you should understand why. So from here on out seriously, tread at your own risk. Only click this link if you want to know the BIG SECRET of the movie... oh and care of a spoiler filled story on AICN, here also is the Japanese print ad.

Interesting eh? I'll not ruin anything here by talking about it, but the implications are very startling. Frankly I'm not sure I'd really ever thought about this angle before with the new Indy film. Obviously, if you know me, I like this proposition. What do you think?

Indy 4 comes out May 22nd.

Red Cliff trailer

Check out the trailer for John Woo's massively budgeted $75 million, epic three kingdoms story due out sometime this summer Red Cliff. It's not the best quality video, but you get the idea.

Personally I haven't made my mind up yet. Although I definitely hope John Woo is better now that he is once again working without American involvement.

strike ending soon?

The news has been trickling in since Sunday night that the writers strike is nearing a speedy end. A tentative agreement has apparently been reached, albeit without the aid of "formal" negotiations, that both the WGA and the AMPTP are reportedly able to live with. The main sticking point of that agreement, is the brokered revenues for internet content. Supposedly the deal is similar, if not better, to the one that the AMPTP made with the DGA a short while ago.

While of course nothing is set in stone by this purported tentative agreement, people genuinely seem positive that this strike may be finally coming to a close. Reports that it could end as early as next week have been giving writers some well deserved hope. Of course nothing is formal yet, and I've little doubt that either side could screw things up, but the formal proposal is scheduled to be presented at the negotiating table this Saturday, Feb 9th, and we'll see what happens from there. To keep totally on top of this though, I like surfing the TV Guide's Strike Watch blog for the latest.

As Michale Ausiello reports in his excellent blog, the networks are expected to start devising and revealing plans for the future of their seasons as soon as an outcome has been determined. And he already has the unofficial scoop on the proposed fate of a number of ABC shows. Established big hits Grey's Anatomy, Desperate Housewives, Ugly Betty and Brother's & Sisters are expected to resume filming as early as the end of March with the intention to put 4 or 5 more episodes on our screens before the season is out, while newer shows that are returning are expected to hold off until a summer shooting scheduled and a fall relaunch. And this is expected to be the pattern the other big networks take. As for Lost, Heroes and 24, for now there's no word. I know it's seems like there is a lot of new stuff on tv these days, but just check out this updated list of the shows left to us; 'seriously dwindling' is a phrase that I think describes the situation well.

But regardless of when we get our shows back I definitely think this has gone on for long enough. The writers deserve compensation for their work, and I'm glad to see that the AMPTP sounds like its finally starting to come to some reasonable terms. Lets keep our fingers crossed that this is all over by next week, and definitely in time for the Oscars.

Y ends, and begins...

So as you may know, I'm a fan of Brian K Vaughn's comic series Y: The Last Man. In fact other than Warren Ellis, Vaughn is probably my absolute favorite comic writer ever. Y in particular is a gripping story that is very accessible and entertaining; consequently I often use it as an ideal jumping off point to introduce non-comic book folk to the graphic arts. Admittedly I am a bit behind on the series, but that might have more to do with the fact that I only read my comics these days in trade format than anything else. So it's sad news to note that this month Y: The Last Man has finally after a very solid 60 issue run come to a conclusion.

But fear not, as I mentioned here a while back, Y the Last Man is coming to the big screen, and we recently got a few scant but tender morsels of news on it. Set to be directed by DJ Caruso, and written with Carl Ellsworth, the lingering rumors that Shia Labeouf is up for the lead have substantiated themselves. While nothing is official yet, and Shia has recently talked about how he's not sure where it will fit into his schedule, it's clear that everyone involved wants him for the job. Additionally in a recent USA Today interview Caruso has talked a bit about the initial plan to cram the entire story into one movie is not really fesable, so they have moved onto crafting a Y trilogy of films! The first film, whenever it actually gets made, will cover only the first 14 issues of the comic. The material is dense, and it deserves the time. Caruso also says that he intends to make Y his next project after he wraps on Eagle Eye (also starring Shia Labeouf) this March, but since he, and Shia intend to take some time off the start date has not been set just yet.

I'll definitely keep my eyes open for more Y the Last Man movie news, but in the meantime I highly recommend you try out the comics. It's really a great read, that will only get you more excited to see it on the big screen.

Henson biopic

Frankly I'm not too surprised by today's announcement that a Jim Henson biopic is in the works. Empire Film Group has announced a $30 million picture scheduled to lens at the end of the summer. They hope to attract a top-tier director, such as Penny Marshall, to helm the film. And I've little doubt they will succeed.

Henson is as we all know, one of the greatest entertainers of the last century. The Muppets inspired and touched so many people I can bet you that this will be a fantastic film. Epic, inspirational, and probably a tearjerker. In fact if played right, it could be almost guaranteed an Oscar worthy film.

I'll tell you a little story, if you'll indulge me, of my personal experience of the power of the Muppets. So this was back when I lived in Vancouver and was working as a PA in the film industry. I worked for maybe three days on A Very Merry Muppet Christmas. And although I spent most of that time sweeping up fake snow for a scene with Miss Piggy and David Arquette, I did get a brief chance to meet the legend himself, Kermit the Frog.

It was probably about 6pm one night, and just starting to get dark. We were filming in a building in the West End, which is a very nice family and gay area of Vancouver. Some of the neighborhood parents had found out what the film was; and had brought their kids out in the hopes of catching a glimpse of one of the muppets. Some of these families had waited on the sidewalk for literally two hours hoping to see something, and I guess the stars noticed because sure enough, on the way over to set Brian Henson, and Kermit stopped by the gathered crowd to chat for a while.

I don't know how to describe the situation without sounding cheesy, so bear with me, but watching Kermit interact with the kids was nothing short of magical. Honestly it was just so amazing to see these kids absolutely light up at the sight and sound of the frog. It didn't matter in the slightest that there was a puppeteer standing right beside him, and speaking in Kermit's voice; as soon as Kermit started talking he was totally alive and you just could not take your eyes off him. It made me smile, heck it still does, and took me right back to that feeling of being a kid, loving everything about the muppets. Their power is undeniable to this day; and because it I was old enough to appreciate it, this memory is something I will cherish forever.

I'm actually surprised it's taken so long for someone to get a Henson movie off the ground. I look forward to being swept away by the story of a great man's life.

new Iron Man trailer

Wow; this is a really sweet new trailer for Iron Man. Comprised of almost entirely unseen footage this tv trailer, which you might've seen during the superbowl kicks a heck of a lot of ass. I love the shot at the end where he uses the arm rocket to blow up that tank. Very very cool. Check it out.

Iron Man - Paramount Pictures

Aside from this small iFilm version of the trailer, I highly encourage you to go check out the newly revamped, relaunched official Iron Man site which features this very ad, and the apple trailer page where you can find it in beautiful HD. Enjoy.

Iron Man comes out May 2nd, '08.

The Listner to NBC

You remember how a few days ago I mentioned how CBS was picking up and producing the CTV series Flashpoint, well in a fit of what I assume is Canadian envy NBC has launched their own venture north of the border announcing plans, linked here via AICN, to bring a show called The Listener to life stateside.

From the press release on the show:

"Produced by Toronto's Shaftesbury Films, "The Listener" tells the story of a young man who can read people's thoughts, and act on them. NBC has ordered 13 episodes of the one-hour drama series, which was green-lit by CTV, Canada's largest private broadcaster, last December. Set in Toronto, "The Listener" is currently in pre-production with shooting scheduled to begin this spring.

In "The Listener," Toby Logan (Craig Olejnik, "In God's Country") is a young, big-city paramedic with the power to listen to people's thoughts. With his paramedic partner Osman Bey (Ennis Esmer, host of "The Toronto Show") as his sidekick, Toby juggles life as a telepathic sleuth with that of an urban twenty-something."

If Heroes has taught us anything its that telepathy can be cool. Granted the last line about balancing life as a "telepathic sleuth" and an "urban twenty something" is a bit worrisome, but for now lets stay positive. Good things do on occasion come from the Great White North, and I hope The Listener is one of them.

Forbidden Kingdom trailer

I know that Forbidden Kingdom is the long awaited team up movie with Jackie Chan and Jet Li, but frankly I'm a bit underwhelmed by this trailer. Maybe I just need to let it grow on me though... Besides, this reviewer on AICN really liked it a lot.

The movie is set to come out on April 18th, '08.

UPDATE - IESB has posted some nice (and a few not so nice) new posters for the film.
-

Three more join the Joes

Three more key pieces of casting for the upcoming G.I. Joe film have fallen into place.

IESB reports that Arnold Vosloo has been cast as the chameleon-like leader of the Dreadnoks Zartan. Vosloo is familiar to director Stephen Sommers, and probably you too, as having played the dreaded mummy Imhotep, in The Mummy. While Zartan himself is supposed to be Australian, and looks nothing like what I remember Vosloo as from The Mummy, at elast we know he has the screen presence to carry the role.

As a side note IESB also absolutely confirms, that Channing Tatum has indeed been cast as Duke.

Next, IESB reports that veteran stage actor David Murray has been cast as the masked villain Destro. Although, he was obviously always the coolest of the bad guys in the cartoon, he usually played second fiddle to Cobra Commander. Reportedly The movie version of Destro will be a total badass though who ultimately is the big bad guy for at least this first, film. Whether Cobra Commander makes an appearance at all in the film has not been revealed. But my hope is that he will show up at the very end of the film, after the Joes kick Cobras ass, having been forged from the fires of battle to lead Cobra onto greater victory in the sequel... at least that's what I'm imagining.

Finally, as reported by Variety the actual official leader of the G.I. Joe program General Hawk has been cast. He, as all the Joes are, is a combat veteran but in the cartoon he rarely if ever actually went into battle. Hawk, along with General Flagg (for a number of years technically the other highest ranking officer) were the soldiers that had been forced into the more political roles of running the G.I. Joe program, whereas Duke is the tried and true field commander. This role has gone to none other than Dennis Quaid. A role, I can see him actually doing quite well with.

Interestingly and kind of quietly, these casting stories are now listing, at the bottom of the page in the obligatory already cast paragraph, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, who was announced to be 'in talks' before, as cast as the character Rex. and who is Rex you ask? I know I did.... its not anyone I remember. So I've just done a quick google search, and what should I find but this Latino Review script review from December of '05. Of course the film will have changed greatly since that draft back then, but just have a look at what they say on the matter. I won't spoil it here, and if true it is a rather BIG SPOILER, so link on at your own risk.

Anyhow, that pretty much rounds out the cast. Now I want to see a teaser trailer, or at least some artwork. Hopefully soon....

UPDATE - just saw that Latino Review has just today posted a spoilery review of the actual final shooting script.
