Terminator Salvation teaser trailer

Wow. This is a great trailer for Terminator Salvation. It's just a great tease because it gets me so pumped up. It shows you something, in fact a number of somethings, but what exactly is hard to tell. And its different than the description that leaked a little while ago. Watch for yourself and decide what you think.

I think that's pretty sweet. The shot of Bale in the fatigues, everything dusty and crumbling, the big explosion in the middle, the boot walking over the skull, and of course that great punch at the end. I mean WTF was that machine?! Whatever it was it kicks ass!

The one note I have though, is since tag line in the ad is "The End Begins", does that mean we're definitely not going to see "the Future Begins" anywhere anymore? I mean you can't have both those tags right?

Terminator Salvation opens in theaters May 22nd, 2009.

Outlander trailer

And here we have yet again, another movie that totally seems to have snuck up on me, Outlander. It's sci fi meets medieval, or maybe medieval is wrong, they're really more like LOTR vikings meeting a Pitch Black reject on a quest to kill the Predator. Yeah thats it... just watch the damn trailer.

The movie seems pretty cool eh? I know I'll be interested to see how it plays out. Hopefully not too predictable. No American release date yet, but I suspect we'll find out more on that soon too.

New Clone Wars posters

Care of IESB, check out these great new posters for Clone Wars. I love how the colors just pop off these. Very very nice.

The 'feature film' portion of the new tv series will debut on the big screen this August 15th.

Plastic Man rumor

Over at CHUD they recently reported on what they admittedly call a rumor. Granted that rumor came second hand from uber producer Joel Silver himself. Apparently he was on German radio talking mostly about Ninja Assassin, and he brought up the plan for the Wachowski's to follow up Ninja Assassin, and really more importantly the under-seen Speed Racer, with a film version of the DC hero Plastic Man.

Plastic Man, aka Patrick Eel' O'Brien, was a once a petty criminal, but after a botched robbery at a chemical plant caused him to fall into a vat of some kind of horrible Chemical X; Eel gained the power to amazingly stretch his body. Since then he has reformed his ways, and become something of a comical hero. Despite often being written as an excuse for Gumbification and goofy antics, the character has a good heart, and can be written very well. Anyone who's read Mark Waid's excellent JLA run, from the 90s with the Tower of Babel story followed by the Cathexis story will know that. And we know that the Wachowskis are fans of the character, having actually already written a script for the film.

The other big piece to this puzzle though is that reportedly Keanu Reeves is in talks to take on the leading role. Crazy I know, but they do already have a good working relationship and somehow I could see them pitching a mostly goofy stretchy superhero to Keanu and making headway.

Could be real, could just turn out to be rumor. Interesting nonetheless.

Lost Planet to the big screen

Some pretty cool film news out of the big annual video game convention E3 this week, Capcom's third person action shooter Lost Planet: Extreme Condition is coming to the big screen care of Warners with Seaside Entertainment. The movie will make another foray into the world of film for Capcom who as you should know were behind the Resident Evil games, and of course Street Fighter.

The film is reportedly being written by Watchmen scribe, and voice of Solid Snake, David Hayter. Although plot details are under wraps the game Lost Planet as far as I can tell culled from wikipedia, deals with some pseudo-military homesteaders making a stand to claim the frozen world of E.D.N. III for mankind. They intend to drive off the buglike aliens called the Akrid, and find a mystical life giving energy source that could help terraform the world for man or could destroy them all. The protagonist is a hard ass amnesiac, who must contend with both the bugs and a duplicitous faction of humans bent on controlling the situation to their own nefarious ends.... isn't that always the way?

Anyhow, I think it sounds very cool. The gameplay looks like a lot of running around with big guns, and riding in sweet sci-fi tech, including some nice mecha. Check out this video of the game.

Pretty sweet eh? No word yet on when the film will be targeted for, but you can be sure we'll be hearing more on this soon enough.

Spirit trailer 2

You know there has been some great trailers launching in the past few days and I have definitely been a bit negligent. Please forgive and check out this fantastic new trailer for The Spirit.

The movie looks just about as tripped out stylistically as Sin City. I think like that film, this could end up being a big hit. The moody music, the non-existent or blown out backgrounds, and the beautiful women. For a newspaper comic from the 40s this sure seems to have a modern artistic sensibility. I definitely am interested to see more.

The Spirit opens Christmas Day 2008.

Big Brother 10 - week 1

Well Big Brother started again this week, and you know that means I'm going to be glued to the set watching. Thank goodness, I've managed to curb my addiction and not spend my waking moments reading Jokers Updates all the time anymore.... I'm sure that'll come though.

Every season I seem to tell myself ok, this year you'll just watch and be chill with it. Not stress if you miss an episode, and have fun. But that's not how it works. I get invested in these people, and I can't stop myself. For now though I'm still convincing myself that Big Brother is a fun little diversion. For now...

Big Brother 10 is a throwback to some of the older seasons of the show. It is apparently the first time since Big Brother 3 that none of the houseguests has known each other at all before entering. A very good idea if you ask me. After the Ex-factor, All Stars, and Till Death Do You Part, I think the fans just want a straightforward show for a season. This year its another crew of likely candidates, young and pretty people, many of which are not too bright living together for 3 months. And in the very first week, the backstabbing and gameplaying began hard.

I picked Brian as my favorite player by halfway through the first episode. Little did I know he would play his hand way too fast, or that Ollie would be such an untrustworthy creep. I think its too bad Brian's gone, he was the schemer, the manipulater and that's always a fun thing to watch unfold slowly. I do think that if he'd managed to make it through the first weeks elimination he would've lasted a fair ways, too bad for him.

As for the rest, I think I've picked my remaining favorites... It has to be Angie and Steven. But if you've ever watched this show you know that one week to the next can literally turn the entire audience against someone, so I hope I still like them in the weeks to come. For my money the worst people in the house are Renny, and Ollie, I also think that April might end up seriously getting on my nerves. We'll just have to see though.

So far the events have been good. Although the PoV was pretty sticky and gross at least it was funny. I did love the puppet show... Seems like this season is going to shape up pretty well. Next week... more drama.

If you missed an episode of BB you can watch them in full for free here. Sweet :)

9 to theaters

In a case of one thing I wasn't familiar with leading to a whole other thing I hadn't ever heard of, I feel compelled to mention 9 again. As I just discovered by doing a little web surfing, 9, which is set to become a feature length film produced by Tim Burton, is based on a 2005 Academy Award nominated short animated film of the same name.

The new film which will be directed by, the originals creator and director Shane Acker, will be a CG animated film, but will have the signature Tim Burton look of claymation. The voice cast for the film includes the likes of Elijah Wood, Jennifer Connelly, Christopher Plummer, and John C. Riley. But I know what you're saying still.. .What the heck is the plot?! Well instead of that, why don't you just watch the original short film. It's only 10 minutes long and right here :)

If you can't won't or don't want to watch... well that's too bad, its a really neat little film. According to the wikipedia page for the feature film "9 takes place in a world parallel to our own, in which the very legacy of humanity is threatened. A group of sapient rag dolls, living a post-apocalyptic existence find one of their own, 9, who displays leadership qualities that may help them to survive. The conflicted, but resilient group includes 1, a domineering war veteran; 2, an aged inventor; 5, a stalwart mechanic; 6, a visionary and artist; and 7, a brave warrior."

So if you did watch the film above, you'll see that is a bit different than that description. Not entirely, but a bit. Anyhow, I just saw all that and thought it was cool, so I knew I had to share it. Hope you enjoyed. I know I did.

The film is scheduled to come out around Christmas time this year.

The Red Star movie

Well I'm not exactly sure how this cool sounding project passed me by unaware, but maybe it has something to do with my unfamiliarity with the source material. Acclaimed Image comic The Red Star is coming to the big screen, care of Universal Studios and Timur Bekmambetov.

Timor who just finished directing the rather unoriginal Wanted, has his sights set to the stars in this sci-fi / fantasy takes place in a mythic Soviet future. According to THR ""Red Star" is an epic war saga set in a reimagined Soviet Union where militarized sorcery and monolithic technology live side by side." According to wikipedia the first storyline in the spare few miniseries in the universe deals with a historic battle between the Red Army and the Al'Istaan (who I think are aliens...). I'll tell you I've honestly been reading about this project for a few hours today, and I just can't exactly wrap my head around it. It sounds complex but really just fascinating, in the Final Fantasy III kind of way, by mixing sci-fi technology with the occult. I'm just not sure if its too complicated, or if its maybe one of those stories that as soon as you saw it, you'd understand perfectly.

Comics2Film posted Timor's thoughts on the film quoting him as saying of The Red Star, "It's my dream project. It's something between 'Star Wars' and 'Dr. Zhivago'." Not much else is known. Except the script by Matthew Sand, who is currently working on Ninja Assassin for the Wachowski bros, is behind the adaptation; and AICN has some pretty scathing remarks on it. Their accusations of derivation aside though, the concept is something we haven't really seen before. An alternate history, science fiction ghost story. That's something I think I can get behind. Besides look at this artwork from the comic, that just looks cool.

You can learn more about The Red Star, from the official website... But even that's a bit confusing. This project might take a while to come to the screen, with Timor committed to Tim Burton's 9, The Knights Templar, and now apparently Wanted 2. We'll see what becomes of The Red Star as we move forward, but I know so far I'm definitely game.

Eagle Eye poster

Check out this poster for Eagle Eye. I know its simple but doesn't it feel just very Hitchcock to you? I really love it. Its got a very classic feel. And I suppose Hitchcock is the right name to invoke with the Shia / DJ Caruso team up seeing as their last film together was a Rear Window remake.

AICN's early review of the first act of the film says that it is absolutely fantastic, and defies any expectations you might have. The film apparently is going to kick all of our asses. I'm definitely getting excited about this one.

Eagle Eye comes out September 26th, '08.

Joss Whedon's online opus Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along-Blog has launched. But only for a limited time so you'd better act fast. Don't know what the heck I'm talking about?? Read this.

Each of the three acts will be launched online for free. Act One today, Two on the 17th, and Three on the 19th. But after 07/20 all three acts will disappear from the internets and we'll have to wait for the dvd.

Watch it while you can.

Downey as Sherlock

Forget about Borat and Farrell, the next real Sherlock Holmes film, from director Guy Ritchie sounds like its starting to shape up. As previously reported the film, an attempt to reinvigorate the character for a modern audience should feature a more gritty super sleuth. And now its being reported than none other than Iron Man himself, Robert Downey Jr is set to sign on as the greatest detective ever.

The project is being fast tracked and should beat the competing Holmes film to the big screen. Filming is set to start this October.

Max Payne trailer

Could it actually be a good movie based on a video game??? Like Hitman only better maybe? I've never personally played Max Payne, but after seeing this trailer for the movie I think I might have to... Check it out.

From LR, "Based on the legendary, hard-hitting interactive video game, "Max Payne" tells the story of a maverick cop determined to track down those responsible for the brutal murder of his family and partner. Hell-bent on revenge, his obsessive investigation takes him on a nightmare journey into a dark underworld. As the mystery deepens, Max (Wahlberg) is forced to battle enemies beyond the natural world and face an unthinkable betrayal."

The movie comes out October 17th, 2008.

Going Postal for Heroes

Heroes news is slowly going to start filtering our way, and I couldn't be happier. I'm really looking forward to season 3. I think the show will get back on the right track. And if the new 3 part webisodes are any indication I think we might just be glued to watching Heroes online for the rest of the summer too. Check out the trailer for the online only Heroes story, Going Postal. The first part of the web only exclusive will air on NBC.com this Monday 07/14, with the final two parts to air the following Mondays for the next two weeks respectively. Check out the trailer.

Seriously, it sent shivers down my back when I first saw it. I love it. Heroes the actual show, will kick off its 3rd season on September 22nd, beginning the volume entitled "Villains"...

UPDATE - The first of the Going Postal webisodes has dropped online. It's called "A Nifty Trick" and you can watch it here.

Wolverine pic

So this new picture of Wolverine from X-Men Origins: Wolverine has surfaced from the pages of Empire magazine. I think it looks pretty sweet. I know we've all seen Jackman with the claws before, but this is a good reminder, Wolverine is coming, and its going to kick your ass.

I read 8 issues back to back from my Essential Wolverine this morning on a flight to San Fran from Vancouver, so I'm on a bit of a high for the character. This spin-off film has a ton of potential to rock really hard. Just check out this interview with Kevin Durand who plays The Blob in the movie. Very good stuff. Also Durand is a personal hero of mine, as he was the absolute nicest actor ever when I worked on Dark Angel with him.

X-Men Origins: Wolverine comes out May 1st, 2009.

Watchmen video journal 4

Here it is, finally a comment on The Watchmen film from a non-curmudgeonly comic creator. It's Dave Gibbons who illustrated the OGN in the newest installment of the Watchmen video journal. Enjoy.

Watchmen comes out in theaters, March 6th, 2009. And these video journals will keep coming one a month until then. Oh and if you're interested, check out IESB's report on their in depth set visit.

Mutant Chronicles

Man, now here's a property I can get behind. And its not just because I've never heard of it before... Mutant Chronicles is an upcoming movie, no release date yet but will reportedly be late '08, that's based on a steampunk tabletop RPG of the same name. I think it sounds awesome, and looks even better.

If for some reason you couldn't tell, that was Hellboy himself Ron Perlman, alongside Thomas Jane, and more. The movie is directed by Simon Hunter, who I have never heard of, but I really love the look. Over at Latino Review they have an excellent extended plot synopsis as well, but I'll leave that for you to head over and read if you like. I think the trailer speaks for itself.

For a basic breakdown of whats happening though, according to wikipedia, "The story is set in the year 2707. The film's version of the world of the Mutant Chronicles role-playing game, where nearly everything is powered by steam, mankind has exhausted Earth’s natural resources. Four corporations have taken over the world in which they are constantly at war with one another" "During a battle between two of the corporate forces, an ancient machine is unburied and mutants swarm the world. A team of unlikely heroes set off to destroy the machine and save mankind."

Pretty cool stuff, I love when films like this just turn up out of left field.

Day the Earth Stood Still trailer

I missed posting this last week, so in case you missed watching it, now you should definitely check out the trailer for the remake of The Day the Earth Stood Still, starring Keanu Reeves.

Oh my... what do you think? I think I'm of two minds on this after seeing the trailer. On one hand, its horrible and sacrilege, and all that other stuff, and on the other of course I'm intrigued. I suppose that's what they want. I guess a part of me just wishes that they would stop making remakes, or at least stop calling them remakes. Why not call this a new film that was inspired by the original DTESS? Ah well, I guess I just don't know from marketing. If you're interested be sure to check out this MTV Movies Blog interview with the films director where he talks about the trailer, some of their decisions on where to take the update, and how to address the issue of Gort. It's interesting stuff.

The Day the Earth Stood Still comes out December 8th, 2008.

A bunch of Joe news

Over the past little while there has been a bunch of great G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra news and I simply haven't had time to share it with you. But trust me this is all just awesome stuff.

Especially the biggest most awesomest news of all. There's a new G.I. Joe animation on the way!!! No word exactly on whether the series will be on tv, on the web, or just sold on dvd but it sounds fantastic! Taking a cue from Clone Wars, this Joe series, called G.I. Joe: Resolute, will be a microseries, consisting of ten, 5 minute episodes, and one, 10 minute season finale episode. So all told we're talking about 60 minutes of Joe action. As you can imagine this might be a difficult product to find a place for on regular television. But honestly I just don't care because it sounds great. The always excellent Joe resource Hisstank.com has a great breakdown of the sneak peak that was recently shown at the New York Licensing Fair. The show will be PG-13 and aims to be exactly what we've always wanted from our Joe cartoon. The action will be intense, people will die, and the characters will be badass. Read the full report at Hisstank.

I am very excited by this news if you couldn't tell. The past few Joe outings in animation haven't been too great. I am decidedly NOT a fan of Sigma 6, and as for the direct to dvd fare, while Spy Troops was alright (mostly due to the awesome Shipwreck centric story), Valor vs Venom was extremely weak, and if anyone out there other than me has seen Ninja Battles, you know it was like they weren't even trying... Hasbro claims that this new series isn't about trying to make a ton of money for the company, its about being creative, doing something we all want, and increasing the brand presence before the live action movie gets into gear next summer. Great stuff.

The next piece of Joe news is also awesome. Remember back at the beginning of the year when they were just starting to cast the Joe movie? It was reported then that veteran British stage actor David Murray would be playing Destro in the film, but then quickly due to some VISA issues he had to drop out and was replaced by everyone's favorite 9th Doctor Who, Christopher Eccleston. Well it now appears that Murray is back in the film, and no he's not replacing Eccleston, he's actually in the film playing another Destro! The original Destro to be exact, According to IESB, he will portray the character James McCullen the 1st, the ancestor to the current day tyrant and arms dealer. He will be the first of the clan to wear the iron mask.... Which means, that we are definitely going to be getting flashbacks into Destro's family history! Awesome. I only vaguely remember that episode of A Real American Hero where they told this story, but it always stood out in my mind as extremely cool. And everyone knows Destro is the most badass of all the villains. This is exactly the kind of thing I want of my G.I. Joe movie.

In other Joe movie news, it seems that Brendan Fraser was not exactly clear before when talking about his cameo role in the Joe film. Instead of playing Gung Ho, Fraser recently told the Winnipeg Sun that he is actually playing Rock & Roll. AND he'll be riding by us on the classic Joe vehicle, the three wheeled motorcycle called the RAM.

Next up is a bit of ancillary news that's sure to make some people very happy. As you probably know, IDW recently got the license to make a new G.I. Joe comic book line. The question among the fan community was how would they handle the original Marvel continuity or the more recent and affecting Devil's Due stories? Also, what about the rumors that Joe comic legend Larry Hama himself would be involved... Well IDW editor-in-chief Chris Ryall has directly answered the fans questions on their message board, check via IESB, and he says they've made the decision to start fresh in terms of continuity. He gives a long and very well thought out response to the question though, and I think brings up valid points. They respect everything that's come before of course, but they will treat this as something of a reboot, he calls it G.I. Joe: A New Beginning, which I think is kind of sweet. Also he confirmed that Larry Hama will in fact be working on the book, which is simply the best possible news for everyone. And he even notes that IDW will now have republishing rights to the old Marvel and DDP stories, so hopefully we'll get some more of those hard to find trades on the shelves. The first issue #0 will come out this October, followed by #1 in January.

Finally, onto the bread and butter of the Joe franchise, the toys. Well, in a somewhat historic move, Hasbro is finally letting an outside company take a crack at a 12" Joe line, and thankfully it's Sideshow Collectibles. After the notable work they did over the years on the 12" Star Wars figures, really bringing that size of doll back into vogue there's really no one else I would think of for this kind of job. Check out Sideshow's two excellent behind the scenes videos on the making this new venture and what approach they're taking, followed by a look specifically at their Snake Eyes figure, here and here. So far Snake Eyes is the only one on sale, and the exclusive version is sold out, but you can own the regular version yourself for a mere $120... ok, maybe that's a bit steep, but he is pretty damn cool.

Remember everyone, G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra hits theaters August 7th, 2009. It's gonna be big! And hopefully we'll get more details on the new series soon as well. Stay turned. For a little final Joe fun, check this out :)

Iron Man 2 seems to have a director

If you'll remember online about a month or so ago Jon Favreau stirred up some trouble by commenting generally on how Marvel was dragging their feet locking him down for Iron Man 2, and that he was concerned with their lack of communication, and seemingly rushed street date. Well it looks like we can just about collectively breathe a sigh of relief. A week or two ago there were some rumblings from the man himself that the horizon was looking brighter and Marvel was in negotiations with him. Check out this IESB exclusive video for a great interview with Favs where he talked about that, as well as some on The Avengers and his thoughts on Dark Knight. Now Deadline Hollywood has announced that they've been hearing that a deal has in fact been reached. While nothings been officially announced yet, it sounds like Favreau is set to take up the directors chair again for the planned 2010 sequel. All I can say, is thank goodness this is getting worked out now. Marvel made some good moves this summer, and I hope they continue the winning streak.

Also on a cool sidenote; in that IESB video interview with Favreau he says that he intends to include a Thor cameo in IM2. Sweet :)
