Spielberg's Ghost

So according to Variety Steven Spielberg has decided he is so taken by the mega hit manga / anime Ghost in the Shell that he plans to bring it to the big screen and a full fledged American audience as soon as he can. This week Dreamworks (is that still around?) acquired the rights to the comic, and Spielberg has announced he plans to bring it to life as a live action 3-D film.

While apparently some elements of the backstory of Ghost in the Shell vary depending on what context you take it, be it manga, anime movies, or tv series, the most basic throughline is that the story is a futuristic cyberpunk police thriller that follows the members of the Japanese, Special Forces police squad known as Section 9. The members of this elite squad, Ghosts, are cyborgs who specialize in fighting technology based crime.

The film is really just at the beginning stages of development. Steven Paul alongside Avi and Ari Arad have come on board as producers, and the writer of the upcoming Keanu opus Street Kings, Jamie Moss is set to adapt to books.

If you aren't familiar with Ghost in the Shell I'd really recommend you watch at least the first film. It's truly a excellent adventure, and sooooo much better than something like Aeon Flux.

I'll definitely be keeping my eye on this to see how it develops, but this could be very big.
